Brooke Jenkins Charges Man With Felony For Stealing Toilet Paper

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

San Francisco’s descent into authoritarian dystopia continues with Brooke Jenkins’ decision to charge an unhoused man with a felony for “organized retail theft” for stealing roughly ten packages of toilet paper on two different occasions at Noe Valley Walgreens. The charge carries a three year prison sentence and would forever mark the accused toilet paper thief with a felony. I don’t understand the mentality behind such a cruel and unusual charge. Are the streets of San Francisco safer when the defendant has a dirty asshole? Is San Francisco’s new catchphrase “Welcome to San Francisco: The city of clean streets and dirty buttcheeks?”

Willie Johnson, the accused butt wipe swiper, was arrested in late January, and Brooke Jenkins, in all her wisdom and fairness, charged Johnson with a felony. Thankfully, the judge realized Jenkin was being unfair and dropped the charge to a misdemeanor. This caused Jenkins to lash out on social media like some kind of child, even calling the judge out by name

However, this time around, Willie Johnson is being treated like some kind of career criminal and not what he actually is – a man who is in crisis and needs help. His petition for bail has been denied and as of now the felony charge has stuck.

This isn’t the first time Brooke Jenkins defended Walgreens like it was her own child. Jenkins also defended a Walgreens security guard, ultimately letting him off the hook for the murder of Banko Brown, an unhoused trans man who had also engaged in petty theft against San Francisco’s greatest asset: Walgreens.

If you want to see how obviously in the wrong the Walgreen security guard was for shooting Brown, click the link here.

This type of rightwing shift has been years in the making and while America seems to be focused on Trump’s economic policies, those most vulnerable in our society continue to have the metaphorical noose tightened around their necks.

Willie Johnson is not a career criminal. He’s a desperate person who wants to wipe his ass after he shits. This is not something anyone should be in prison for. Even if he were to sell the toilet paper, how much damage did he really do?

It’s clear that San Francisco has fallen to Fox News. Spinelessness has infested city government on every level and will continue to bend to the will of the city’s elite, no matter how unreasonable their demands are.

This doesn’t only manifest in potential felony convictions over bullshit, but Mayor Daniel Lurie sending swarms of police to arrest small-time drug dealers and addicts. This isn’t leadership. This is social media engagement farming. They don’t care about the results, as long as the news gets a few right wingers to click like, that’s all that seems to matter.

And it’s fucking disgusting.
