Do you know how exiting this week is? Just in one day you can see Hunky Jesuses, Foxy Marys, a big wheel race, and/or screen The Big Lebowski with The Dude, himself. April has been shaping up to be an exciting month. Also, this week my brother’s band, Eureka Sound, is playing with Fortunate Youth at Brentwood Emporium and Great American Music Hall. I have been looking forward to this week for a while and I’m so happy it’s finally arrived. Here’s everything I’m excited for the week of 4/15 and beyond.

With influences like Rudimentary Peni, Crass, and Hole, Niis fuses rage and reflection into songs that confront and provoke, like “Fuck You Boy,” an unflinching anthem about navigating a male- dominated music scene, or the searing “Tyrant,” which demands liberation from oppressive systems.

With Homme’s help, Lane transformed 11K+ the seeds of ideas she had for years into an album that nods to her wide-ranging influences. Ichiko Aoba has the power to bend space around her, pulling listeners from reality and surrounding them in the comforting fabric of her imagination. She’s been casting these spells since her debut at 19 years old, making picturesque dioramas with only her voice and guitar. But in recent years, she’s turned a corner and let a new process take hold. The Japanese singer, songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist tapped into the full breadth of her ability, marrying the classical guitar of her earlier work with lofty orchestral sweeps. As Ichiko’s star continues to rise, she’s committed to being her truest self. Along with her creative partners Umebayashi and Kobayashi, she’s returned to the recesses of her reverie for her latest project. Her compositions have become grander, her songwriting more refined, and she’s preparing for her largest world tour to date—yet her ability to make listeners feel like they’re inside in a private cosmos alongside her remains as strong as ever.

Matter/Anti-Matter: Recent Work by Makino Takashi
4/24 | The Lab | 2948 16th St, SF | 7:30 p.m. | $15

In work spanning nearly twenty-five years, film/video artist Makino Takashi has mastered the art of superimposition and amorphous abstraction, creating infinitely layered walls of light, immersively oceanic experiences situated at indeterminate points between screen the mind’s eye. In his first Bay Area appearance since 2019, Takasi appears in person to present Microcosmos, Anti-Cosmos and Untitled, a trio of pandemic-era pieces (which include forays into surrealist-inspired graphic collage and spoken word) and the slow-rolling and stirringly emotional 2024 work Constellation, to be presented by live electronics by Makino Takashi himself.

Chase Petra
4/25 | The Independent | 628 Divisadero St, SF | 9 p.m. | $30.36

Chase Petra’s music has always been about growth: growing up, growing out, growing tired of what others expect of you. The Long Beach, CA trio’s sense of figuring things out in real time is what makes Chase Petra so relatable, as the band’s “quarter-life-crisis pop” elevates deep introspection to navigate the messiness and confusion that comes with modern life. Their songs are guided by the age-old push-and-pull between what it means to grow up and be grown up, to see your once-bright dreams dulled by the responsibilities of adulthood and grapple with the fallout.

Rejjie Snow
5/1 | The Independent | 628 Divisadero St, SF | 8 p.m. | $32.42, All ages

By most metrics, Rejjie Snow appears to be a rap artist and that’s technically true. But he doesn’t see it that way, and in any case the simplicity of the label (or any label, really) obscures what makes him different, which is pretty much everything.  He lives wherever his suitcase settles, wherever the songs send him — Los Angeles, New York, London — making albums in the middle of making other albums, and tangling words into beautifully complex knots that blur biography with fantasy over a shifting mass of rainy loops, technicolor keys, and trippy percussion. And then there’s his voice, deep and otherworldly, capable of riding a beat with metronomic precision, cooing to raw piano, or yawping Prince-like over a soul-rock-jazz groove. His influences are as disparate as George Michael and Charles Bukowski. He designs clothes and paints. He almost had a career as a soccer star, but instead Rejjie has toured with Madonna and recorded with left-field dance genius Kaytranada.
