Meet Your Maker: Judgement Day at Union Pool

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The band’s name is Judgement Day.  String Metal is their sound.  Be prepared.  This guitarless, percussive, high-energy violin, cello, and drums trio is, as our very own Stuart says, 'œon some other shit!'

Judgement Day is in a realm of their own.  Brothers Anton and Lewis Patzner combine their innovative style and shredding chops on violin and cello with heavy-hitting, double-kick-pedaling drummer Jon Bush (plus an extensive array of vintage effects pedals) to create a highly unique, highly energizing concoction.  I could tell you all about their past US and European tour partners – Mates of State and dredg – or the guest spots they’ve snatched on Bright Eyes and Slash‘s albums respectively.  I could quote TheBayBridged.com when they called Judgement Day 'œa distinctly progressive, experimental take on the guitar-less metal band, taking full advantage of the strengths of the strings while pushing the sound in unexpected directions,” or East Bay Express who calls them “a technically impressive, highly amusing, and genuinely righteous shredfest.”  But probably the best way to get to know Judgement Day is to hear their music.

Tonight, hit up Union Pool to catch them at their only New York appearance on their Peacocks/Pink Monsters tour!  Peacocks/Pink Monsters, Judgement Day’s 2nd Studio album, 'œis characterized not merely by its metal elements but by a profound interaction with new compositional techniques and the extension of the of the color spectrum of each of the individual instruments. Vintage effects pedals, improvisation and orchestral arrangements are all key elements, expanding the scope of the record’s songs from the deep, dark depths of brutal metal to the iridescent grandeur of outer space.'  Judgement Day is going through a creative explosion, and you don’t want to miss them in their Technicolor glory!

Albums, tracks, and a Collector’s Edition Book/CD are all available here.  Turn up 'œCobra Strike' and let the symphonic roar become the score to your life.  And don’t miss Judgement Day’s bare-bones SXSW street performance video posted by NPR’s All Songs Considered.

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
