Broke-Ass Sandwiches: Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli

There are goddamn sandwiches everywhere in NYC.  Each bodega has their own interpretation of what a sandwich is.  My bodega seems to think a sandwich is slimy meat with shredded lettuce that dissolves into rusty water, and I’m pretty sure the bodega across the street uses the deli cabinet to hide drugs.   So knowing good sandwich spots around the city is essential for your broke-ass survival.  Let’s get started: Saigon Banh Mi.

Banh mi places are apparently popping up everywhere in this city.   Several contributors to this site have their own opinions on the best and cheapest banh mi spots in the city.  Although I’d hate to be at odds with my fellow broke-asses, I will have to respectfully disagree.  Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli is where it’s at. $4.50 (and that has just increased from $4.25) will get you the best banh mi sandwich that you can wrap your frugal lips around.  The bread is so fresh that you’d think they baked it just for that sandwich, and its HUGE.  It’s not one of those shitty little $5 banh mi sandwiches they have at Banh Mi in Williamsburg (not too shitty, but more of an appetizer than a sandwich), or the way-too-expensive banh mi sandwich they have at their sister restaurant An Nhua.

Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli has great vegetarian options too.  The classic vegetarian is good, but the curry chicken sandwich made with tofu is great.  Order it spicy or get a side of Sriracha.  Enjoy!
