A MAP OF SAN FRANCISCO’S NEW STREET ART 2020

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

San Francisco art organization ‘Paint the Void’ has commissioned something like 100 murals across San Francisco and the East Bay during shelter-in-place.  84 different boarded up storefronts got covered with art by Bay Area artists.  Turning many of our empty, commercial corridors into actual art walks.

Visit the interactive Paint the Void Mural Map here.  It works great on mobile, and it has all the mural locations along with the credits of the 84 different artists responsible.  If you are looking for a new route to take your dog, your bike, or your hubby for a walk, this is a great tool to turn your shelter in place exercise into an art walk.

Here’s a dope little video with SF Symphony bass player Dan Smith playing in front of several murals in Hayes Valley.   Hayes used to be a real stomping ground for patrons of the Symphony, Ballet, and Opera, who were all silenced by COVID.  Naturally the bars shops and eateries all suffered tremendously when the nightlife disappeared, and tourist stayed home.

A bit of color and creativity is far better than voided storefronts and blank boarded up windows.

Paint the Void also collaborated with San Francisco General Emergency Room doctors and nurses to create a wonderful wall on at Zuni Cafe on Market St.   Check out this little doc by Paint the Void photog Lisa Vortman.  A ‘thank you’ to our city’s essential workers.

(The Video was made by Visual Street TV, a collaboration with Paint the Void + SFGH Foundation, Artist is Jennifer Bloomer at Restaurant Zuni.)

Paint the Void has organized, commissioned, and executed all these murals around the bay with donations from you and me.   If you have a few bucks that you want to turn directly into public art, donate to PTV here, and put local artists to work.

For a map of the permanent murals around SF check out our article about that here, there are art walks for days in our city.
