The Local Dahlia Farm Owned by Witches
It’s currently the height of dahlia season and the fields are bursting with vibrant flowers. Knowing this, I gathered a few friends for a picnic at one of my favorite hidden gems, The Happy Dahlia Farm. Located in Petaluma, the farm is just far enough away that you feel you’ve escaped the craziness of The Bay without the long drive.
The Happy Dahlia Farm is much more than just a flower farm. There are numerous self-proclaimed green witches that take care of the land. While you won’t find anyone on a broomstick, you will find that there are small spells that they cast at the farm to set their own intention for the farm.
Everyone who works there gets up before dawn to harvest flowers and they leave little blessings along the path as they tend to the land such as feathers they have found, crystals and flower pedals. Meagan Major, owner of the farm, has been manifesting the farm of her dreams with magic. She’s designing a space where people have been using the power of the dahlias around them to conjure up peace, happiness, and beauty in their lives.
Among the flowers, you’ll feel a sense of ease. Almost as if you’re under a spell, your cares float away as you gaze upon the beauty around you. Near the center of the farm, you’ll find a large quartz crystal. Quartz has healing properties which bring balance, clarity, and energy to the farm and those who visit the space.
“We have Yoga in the field and sound baths. Each Sunday we have live music. We hold moon ceremonies and flower classes. We love to support the community in coming together in love. It is important to remember we can come together and celebrate beauty,” says Major.
When talking about how she found herself the owner of a dahlia farm, Major said, “Angels sprinkled some breadcrumbs and I followed the path. It was very spontaneous and intuitively guided. I knew that I wanted a place for the community to come together and celebrate the beauty of nature. I just didn’t imagine it would be a dahlia farm.”
There’s so much beauty at the farm. Every flower has its own personality almost. Some feel silly and some feel more serious and closed off. I had a pretty great conversation with one of the flowers, true story.
Especially here in The Bay Area, we seek out those types of special places which can’t be recreated. I’m inspired by places where the owner has fostered a sense of community in the space. There’s an unmistakable feeling of connectedness at The Happy Dahlia Farm. You feel pulled to stay there as long as you can.
My friends and I couldn’t pull ourselves away. We stayed until the sun went down almost as if time wasn’t even on our minds anymore. Major feels the same, “What I love the most is seeing peoples faces as they walk into the field verses when they walk out. There is a child like wonder that returns to their faces. You can see the stress melt away and a lightness wash over people. It renews my spirit time and time again. It gives me hope. “
Major is always actively working to expand the farm’s community of healers, and spiritual guides. During the summer months, you can come to the farm to build your own bouquet, have a picnic or even book a photoshoot with friends with a professional photographer within Major’s network.
What’s next for the farm? Major wants to harness the sacredness of flowers and nature. She wants to call in more people who love the beauty of nature as much as she does. “I want it to become more of a sanctuary. A place you can count on to unplug from the matrix and breath into magic. This is a church for the lovers of the Earth. I hope it continues to remind people how precious and important it is to tend the land and love it. Each flower is its own little miracle. I hope people can remember that,” she says.

Other local farm recommendations from the Happy Dahlia Crew:
“I find Singing Frog Farm super inspiring. They have a beautiful farm and a lot of biodiversity. Bees and Blooms is a magical place! They have a lavender labyrinth that is stunning and they are so kind.”
For something a little closer to The City, The Dahlia garden in Golden Gate Park (GGP) is in full bloom right now. The Rose Garden in GGP is always a classic as well as attending Flower Piano at the Botanical Gardens. This starts up again in September and I highly recommend it.
