The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The Bay Area is full of incredible musicians, and if you haven’t caught on yet, discovering new local musicians is one of my favorite pastimes. I’m excited to share my newest fav musician to follow: Asher Belsky, a phenomenal rock and R&B artist. This 19-year-old is a musical prodigy whose talent for guitar and songwriting is awe-inspiring with a massive list of impressive accolades. I want to tell you all of the ways this musician is someone you should know…but, before I forget, you can see him play at Sweetwater Music Hall on June 28th.

When I learned about Asher’s story, it had me reflecting on the origins of talent when you’re an artist of any medium. When people ask me when I personally started my own journey within art, I can’t really pinpoint the exact moment that I became an artist – I believe that I was born as one and it’s taken my whole lifetime to really hone my skills.

Who is the musician Asher Belsky?

Talking with Asher, I wanted to learn when he started playing music and how he became so skilled at it at such a young age & it was clear to me he was born as a musician and it took some time before he started playing an instrument and mastering it’s potential.

I started playing when I was about 5 or 6. My dad is a huge music lover and would always play music around the house and in the car, particularly The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. I was drawn to the sound of the guitar and started taking lessons from a woman down the street,” recalls Asher.

Speaking of Hendrix, check out this INSANE version of Little Wing showcasing Asher’s solo:

I was surprised to learn that Asher didn’t play much music in school – most of us Bay Area-raised kids were nearly forced to learn an instrument or two in school. But obviously, he didn’t need music in school if he was out there playing local venues like The Fillmore, Great American Music Hall, the Bottom of the Hill, the Sebastiani Theatre, and more of our favorite local venues. If that list of venues isn’t enough to impress you, at just 19, Asher Belsky is sponsored by Gibson Guitar.

While he’s inspiring us all with his natural gift of music, he himself finds inspiration mostly from his own musical community that he’s built over his career.

Asher Talking About Who Inspires Him & Which Local Musician is a Mentor to Asher:

My friends keep me inspired. I’m lucky to be surrounded by a bunch of talented people who do all different kinds of things. That shared passion really inspires me because I didn’t have a lot of friends like that growing up who I could bond over music with.

Dan Lebowitz was a great mentor for me. He gave me the opportunity to play at my first festival. He’s a really great musician and a great guy.”

Where can you see Asher Belsky Play?

My favorite kind of music is the kind that drifts you away into almost a different moment in time. Asher’s sound is a soulful R&B blend with sweet lyrical melodies that feel relatable to songs about love and belonging. His sound reminds me of John Mayer a bit, with splashes of Jim Hall guitar, but I think Asher has his own flow, and his arrangements feel unique and special – and less influenced by modern-day pop music. In any case it’s clear, Asher has a bright future on stage.

Which is why you need to go and check out his next show later this month in Mill Valley.  That way, years from now, you can say; “Well, I saw him perform when he was just 19 years old.”

Check out Asher’s soulful R&B music at Sweetwater Music Hall on June 28th. He’ll have some new music debuting at this show which we’re very excited to hear.

Katy has lived in The Bay Area since the age of 3. While other kids were attending summer camp & soccer practice, she was raised selling wares at craft shows with her working artist parents and spent vacations in a small 1920s Montana log cabin. This has all given her a unique perspective on the ever-changing texture of San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area. Currently a blend of all that is The Bay Area - she's a web designer at a tech-company, artist and DIY teacher.
