What It’s Like Working at the Bunny Ranch

There are 19 legal brothels in our neighboring state of Nevada. Kiki Lover, a legal courtesan, works at the most fabled one: The Bunny Ranch. So we asked her everything from how taxes work to what she bought with her first paycheck.

So what is a legal courtesan? “I work at the Bunny Ranch, and I have sex with people for money. Kind of straight forward, isn’t it?” Kiki laughs. She’s worked at the Bunny Ranch for seven or eight years and says she’s finally gotten the perfect schedule for herself down. She’s even got the coveted 4 day work week. “I work from Wednesday until Saturday, from 2pm to 2am.”

Scheduling with Mother Nature

When we asked if she has to plan around Mother Nature, as in getting a period, she says, “Oh. Well, some of the girls still work during that.” How do they get around the inconvenience of having blood in and around your intimate parts?

Well, it’s not something we’d recommend to young women! “They just shove a makeup sponge up there and it really works! Nothing leaks on the customers.”

But Kiki is lucky because she’s anemic, so she bleeds lightly. Too bad we can’t all be God’s favorites. “And with regulars, I just tell them and they don’t care. If you’re just honest with the customers and tell them it’s your time of month, a lot of them don’t care.”

The Four Different Houses

Kiki stays in touch with girls across the four different houses that are owned by the same parent company. There’s the Bunny Ranch but there’s also Kitkat (which Kiki says will get rebuilt soon), Sagebrush, and Love Ranch. And then there are several near Reno and Vegas. A few are in populated cities but most, according to Kiki, are in more rural areas.

“I’ve met a lot of girls throughout the years. Some of my best friends have changed houses.” She says when a house doesn’t work out, a “girl” might move on. “Every house has a different vibe and different clientele.” For instance, one of the houses is more of a “trucker house,” which isn’t her cup of tea. “The Bunny Ranch is the classiest. That’s why I chose to work at this one,” she says.

Are the sex acts different at one location, or is it all kind of the same menu?

“No, the men pretty much want all the same things,” Kiki laughs. “Some guys don’t come in for sex at all!” She explains that guests might come for BDSM services. She doesn’t play submissive roles, but she says there are also customers who come for things like body rubs or just to hang out with somebody. “The service is pretty much the same in all the houses.”

Does the job have retirement or health insurance?

“Yeah, none of that,” she chuckles. “We’re not an employer / employee – we’re independent contractors, our own business that works within their business.” That means they get a 1099 tax form and each courtesan is responsible for everything from retirement to health insurance (Kiki pays $500 a month).

But this system, Kiki says, is actually beneficial. “It’s good because as employees we’d have to get hourly, which is not very beneficial.” Instead, they get to set prices and the house takes half of everything. The girls also get charged $45 a day for room and board, which includes a hired chef who cooks a hot meal once a day. They also don’t have to pay for things like toilet paper or towels.

The chef cooks several different kinds of food each day, including vegetarian. “He separates all the food so all the girls have something to eat,” she says.

Being an independent contractor means they can’t unionize.

When asked about that, Kiki says, “Nope,” and moves on. “It also means we can’t get unemployment.” When everything got shut down in 2020, the girls weren’t able to get unemployment. “Some girls were able to get a PP loan, because you have a small business. I just never applied for it.”

When asked what her favorite thing about her job was, Kiki quickly answers, “The money.” She giggles and then clarifies. “It actually is the financial freedom. I was able to accomplish a lot working there. I paid off my car in cash, I paid off my house in cash. Right now I’m working toward saving up more to open my own business.” And Kiki’s future venture will be squeaky clean – literally! She wants to start a laundromat.

Other perks?

“I meet all kinds of people, and that’s pretty cool.”

Kiki refers to “the girls” several times. Are there any gentlemen who work at the Bunny Ranch? “Nevada state law only allows girls to be legal prostitutes,” Kiki says. “They haven’t gotten modern yet.” Are most of their clients men? “We do have a lot of couples come in but I’m not a huge fan.” Kiki explains that because safety is their number one priority, they need to use dental dams. She explains it’s “a plastic thing you have to put on her kitty before you lick it, and I’m just like… That’s not fair to her [because she’s not going to feel anything.]”

Kiki says that repeat clients are “literally your bread and butter. Especially in the winter time, a lot of people can’t travel at that time of year and there are so many highways shut down. Nobody wants to leave their house.” She’s amassed a clientele of local guys for those lonely winter nights. “Give good service, stay in touch with people… Keep regulars. That’s the number one thing in your business.”

How did Kiki get involved?

She saw a former Bunny Ranch employee on social media who booked “over a million” in just a year and inspired her to reach out. She says the interview process was “the easiest interview ever. I applied online, sent a couple of pictures of [myself]… She called me and we talked on the phone.”

The woman asked if she had any experience or had ever worked at a Nevada brothel before. She lived in New York at the time and was used to the Sugar Baby life.  “I kind of had some idea of what I was getting into.” Within a few days, Kiki was already working onsite. Soon, she decided to move because flying back and forth just wasn’t cutting it. “I’ve always wanted to make my job legitimate,” she says.” And the first paycheck? She spent it on clothes, of course.
