Geishas on the Gowanus

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Well not really.  The Geishas will be emerging tonight at Grasslands, and the party for the Gowanus tomorrow is costume optional (though I think there is a Depression Era theme').  The words both started with G, I was hoping they’d draw you to read this post.  Guess it worked.

GEISHA MINOR TONIGHT

Queer and non-queer alike will join together in celebration of the queer art community in NYC at Geisha Minor at the Grasslands.  Hosted by Sophia Lamar, there will go-go boys in kimonos, historical reenactments, burlesque, avant-garde performances, poetry readings, and dance!  Stick around for a dance party after the performances with DJs Secret Faggot and Benjamin Haber.

Performances by Joseph Keckler, Lee Kyle, BabySkinLove, Gio Black Peter, Sequinette, Erin Markey, Ryan Lawrence, June Fagley, Nicolas Gorham, Louis Jordon, Lonely Christopher, and Inbred Hyprid Collective.

DEPRESSION ERA RENT PARTY for the GOWANUS

You ever ride your bike through Gowanus, over the canal bridge, and look around and think, this is the most beautiful neighborhood I’ve ever seen?  I do this pretty regularly.  And it’s true; Gowanus looks pretty lovely coasting by on a sunny day with the wind in your face.  But if you look a bit closer, there is a lot of work to be done to clear out the debris and clean up the canal.  Gowanus Canal Conservancy is hosting a fundraiser at the home of one of their members.  Great food, lots of beer, excellent music '“ not to mention other like-minded, eco-friendly hot young things.  RSVP to 917-342-2807 or to andy@gowanuscanalconservancy.org.   They are heading tons of community projects, including creating new parks on the canal, and if you are feeling like you need to get some volunteer karma out there, this might just be the event for you!

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle Levanas - Bargain Soul Huntress

Danielle was raised by a pack of coyotes in the Los Angeles hills. Since arriving in NY in 2001, she has had any number of strange jobs, including back-up singing for JELVIS (the Jewish Elvis), starting the non-profit LYDIA, and writing political cabarets. A huge advocate for travel as a way of life, you can find her at the Brooklyn Public Library when her bank account is empty, fantasizing about where to head off to next.
