Book Club Burlesque Does The Curious Sofa
While Bushwick Book Club combines bitchin’ music with works of literature, the Inbred Hybrid Collective’s book club multiplies the sexiness of reading times five. Their Burlesque Book Clubs feature local artists and performers in shows about a piece of literature. They’re starting the year with The Curious Sofa, Edward Gorey’s pornographic tale. It’s pornographic in the same way that Greek plays are violent; all the action is implied. When the Curious Sofa‘s main character gets it on with a dude she meets in the park inside of a cab, all you see is her hand pressed up against the window. In general, Gorey’s books are twisted and a little bizarre (they involve children falling down stairs, women dipping their husbands in acid, etc.), so his soft core porn tale is perfect for a burlesque stage show.
