Dear Anna G, Help Me Pick Up BK Dudes
I swear to god, people, I’m not making these up. Here’s the latest from my inbox:
Dear Anna,
As a single gal in NYC, I’m done dealing with the pretentious shallow cakeboys of Manhattan. I love hearing about your dips in the dating pool of Brooklyn and think you can help a fellow doll out. I’m ready to switch boroughs and find an homme de Brooklyn (Brooklyn Boy). Where do you find a man-scarade? Seriously, I am looking for a BBQ in Prospect Park, a game of hide-and seek in the graveyard, Atlantic Yards and Gowanus strolls and some G train lovin’. Do you have any suggestions?
Dumbo Doll
Dear Dumbo Doll,
I’m not entirely sure what half of that stuff you said means, but I think you’re looking for suggestions on where to pick up guys in Brooklyn? If that’s the case, my scope is somewhat limited to my general neighborhood area of Williamsburg, Bushwick & Greenpoint.
The most obvious place that comes to mind is the meat market we all know as Union Pool. Tacos, a dancefloor, and a photobooth? It’s pretty much in the bag. The only thing is you’re most likely going to meet someone stupid, but if you’re into one night stands, just make sure they’re at least hot. The Richardson, a little further east, is a bit of a graduation from Union Pool– it’s an older crowd, more cocktail-centered, and as long as it’s not repulsively crowded, you can actually hear someone talk.
Coco 66 in Greenpoint is a dance-y pickup spot, I’m pretty sure. I think I may have actually met someone cool there once, but wasn’t in the right frame of mind to continue seeing him after a couple of dates. I also kinda feel like if you are out and about in Williamsburg a lot, and you start to get bored of the same places/people, venturing to Greenpoint can kind of be a bizarro world experience in a good way.
In Bushwick, I feel like there are a very limited amount of bars, so almost anywhere you go, you’ll have a good chance of picking dudes up. I’m pretty excited about Matt Torrey’s being open now– which looks to be a much larger version of Harefield Road. I’ve never been to the relatively new Beauty Bar in Bushwick, but I’m sure that’s probably a good place to go if you live around there.
As far as the whole Park Slope/Prospect Heights/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens area, I’m really not sure, as I pretty much only go to bars near my friends houses or for special events that my friends are having. I feel like a lot of people in that general area are probably married/have kids, etc. I feel kinda bad making that generalization, and I try to get out there as much as I can to discover new places, but the G train has been really annoying lately. However! Clinton Hill/Fort Greene is sort of a beacon of hope in that general area, as its proximity to BAM is promising, and I’ve had a couple of good experiences at Moe’s and Habana Outpost. Anyone currently living in that area have suggestions? I’m going to make a point of getting out there more this spring/summer.
