Free Event With Lots of Vinyl
My first record was a 45. It was a hand me down from my older sister and it played the theme song to 'œFlash Gordon.' If you have ever listened to this song, you will remember that there is a break in the music when some of the '˜story’ is disclosed in the form of a short dialogue. I had always thought it involved two men in intense conversation about the end of the world. To me, it was a man’s deep voice saying slowly and deliberately, 'œFlash, Flash I love you – but we only have 14 hours to save the Earth.' When it returned to the musical portion of the song, it always failed to communicate, to me, the anticipation of the imminent end of the world. Eventually, my sister came in my room, walked over to the busted out, hand-me-down record player and flipped the switch to make it spin faster. Instantly, I was enlightened. The pace was faster, the music more upbeat and finally, a high voiced lady was begging Flash to save the universe. Thusly, my queer interpretation of Flash Gordon was made mainstream…that is until I realized it was sung by Queen.
