BYOB and Empanadas at Tabaré
Going on dates isn’t a thing hipsters really…. do…. since it often involves sobriety (gah), looking somewhat presentable, and acknowledging that an actual courtship is going on. But if you have found that special someone you think you can be sober around, Tabaré is one of the cutest date places ever.
The food is Uruguayan, and, as it turns out, in Uruguay they know their way around an empanada. I love empanadas, to the point where I maybe talk about them too much, and these were excellent. They have three kinds, and I highly recommend the caramelized onion, gruyere, and fontina, though the chicken with onions and peppers was also super tasty ($6 for two). The Chivito Completo ($14), a steak sandwich with bacon, mozzarella, and a fried egg, is apparently the national sandwich in Uruguay, and those it was delicious, it makes me slightly concerned for the country’s cholesterol levels.
Tabare is also BYOB, with no corkage fee, so you will save tons of money on drinks. The $3 Merlot my date and I paired with this meal was, at approximately 30 cents a glass, prettttty great. Plus, when we presented the bottle to our server he was totally nice and not judgey. I get the feeling we could have brought 40s of High Life and it would have been fine. God bless south Williamsburg for making these things acceptable.
