Top Tipple at The Narrows
Starring on an unassuming block off the Morgan L top, The Narrows has what its ‘hood rats need: A space classy enough to not miss Manhattan with drinks served at Brooklyn prices. All smooth lines, dim lights and black and white decor inside with a choice list of premium cocktails and beers, this bar is further proof that things they are a-changin’ for our little Bushwick.
Beers aren’t the cheapest in the borough with quality crafts like Troeg’s Hopback and well-picked seasonals like Nectar IPA ranging from $6-9, but as with any good bar there’s a $6 beer and shot combo with your choice of Jameson and Bud or spicy Jalapeno Tequila and Sol. The real star here are the specialty cocktails, which are $7-9 and worth every penny you dig out of your couch cushions. I am typically not one for hard liquor after a volatile relationship with it in college, but the Caufield’s Dream–rye whiskey, spearmint leaves, lemon and bitters–is my new exception. All include homemade syrups and sours, and like the Dream utilize fresh ingredients found in the bar’s very own backyard. Next time, I’ll try the Babushka: lime, ginger and vodka with soda.
As the name suggests, the cash-only bar is a slim. But comfortable banquettes and a surprisingly spacious backyard hosting plants, the bar’s herb garden and well-placed outdoor furniture make it a spot worth finding over and over.
