Hot Pants and Lace-Ups at Down and Derby
I get the whole hipster embraced sports of the past thing: bowling, kickball, and of course roller-skating. Hell, I’m just waiting for shuffleboard to get its turn as activity of the moment. But for me, the appeal of skating around, knocking into people, and reenacting my “couple-skate” moves, has never lost its charm. If you’re looking for a booze-soaked trip down memory lane, complete with tube socks, then head over to Good Units for the Down and Derby Roller Disco Party.
Truth be told, I used to frequent this party back when it was at the now-defunct Studio B in Greenpoint. I teased out my hair Diana Ross style, throw on some spandex and called it a day. What’s crucial to these parties is having an ample amount of space. Luckily their new residency at Good Units has over 6,000 square feet of skate space and enough track lighting to fully transport yourself to 1975.
Get there early to secure yourself some skates, and admission is only $5 if you RSVP ahead of time. There’s also a $3 PBR drink special from 9pm until the last can is sucked dry to the last drop.
And remember to please skate responsibly (That means no ass handling during the conga line thankyouverymuch)
