Smorgasburg: A Food Flea in Williamsburg
As the name might suggest, Brooklyn Flea’s newest food venture Smorgasburg is both a “giant buffet” of food vendors, and taking place in Williamsburg. Riding the food-truck, artisanal food-crazy bandwagon, this sprawling outdoor market promises to be the one stop shop for all of New York’s foodies every Saturday this Spring and Summer.
With 100+ food vendors and counting, I can imagine there’s going to be some unbuttoning of skinny jeans after a gluttonous afternoon spent at the market. The vendors include some cult-favorites like Meat Hook and plenty of newbies, each hawking their own culinary specialty. Along with fresh prepared food, “the Smorg” (stop trying to make Smorg happen, NY Times!) will also feature a fresh Greenmarket as well as kitchen gear for sale. If this sounds like 50 ethnic food fairs rolled into one, you’re right; cause it’s definitely has every type of cultural food offering represented.
From fried chicken from Momofuku vets, banana-ricotta spring rolls from Bite Size Kitchen, fresh oysters from Brooklyn Oyster Party for less than $3 each, Vendy award-winning huaraches from Country Boys, frozen chocolate-covered bananas from a Pies & Thighs vet, and many many many more. So be prepared to face the ravenous crowds, but from the sounds of it, there will be more than enough to feed all of Manhattan and the outer boroughs combined.
I can pretty much guarantee this experience will far outweigh my only previous encounter with a smorgasbord that involved an ill-fated field trip to Gettysburg. Some come hungry and wear lots of “loose fabrics”.
