Broke-Ass Kitchen: Homemade Green Smoothies

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I usually don’t mind being a broke-ass, but that was until I got sick as fuck. Coughing, sneezing, dripping… I’m a hot mess and without health insurance or the ability to justify spending $50 on drug store meds, I am stuck drinking tea and hoping for the best.

Sarah’s Poor-as-fuck-Stew is on my list of cheap fixes, and so are some homemade smoothies. Once someone bought me a Naked’s Green Machine smoothies and I have been obsessed since, but not so obsessed with spending $4 a pop. I make my own at home, and have been pouring them into ice cube trays to suck on while watching my Uncle Buck VHS in bed. In NYC, I get the goods for cheap from the corner fruit stands or Essex Market, but buying frozen bags of food from Trader Joe’s is also pretty affordable.

Broke-Ass Kitchen: Homemade Green Smoothies

Ingredients: 2 cups spinach or kale, 2 cups frozen berries, 2 bananas, 1 cup citrus juice (OJ, Pineapple, etc), 1 teaspoon ginger powder or fresh grated ginger, plus any other fruits you have lying around.
Cost: Around $5 for 4 smoothies.
Time: 5 minutes.
Soundtrack: Real Estate’s Days
The Plan: Add everything into a blender and then blend well. Yup, that’s it! I add a little black pepper and garlic seasoning too. As I said, I usually freeze an ice cube tray’s worth to keep on hand and pop throughout my miserable, bed-ridden day.  For your health!

She's been honing her thrifty ways since doing that silly thing people talk about when they ignore reason to follow their hearts and chose a career in the fulfilling but faltering music industry. She earns her beer money as a publicist and writer, and spends her spare time cooking, biking, and trying to decide if she's ready to get a cat.
