Broke-Ass Band Interview: Patrick Davy and The Ghosts (Show Tonight at Pianos NYC)

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

There is something alluring about musicians; you don’t exactly know what is, but they have the tendency to seduce you. It could be the lifestyle of the struggling artist, fighting to keep their head above water as they continue to do what they love. That might be it. They’re essentially you, but with instruments and a beautiful singing voice.

After a long hiatus, we present to you the return of our Broke-Ass Band Interview series, featuring Patrick Davy and The Ghosts. If you love to hear electrifying guitar rhythms, passionate vocals, and an uncanny poetic ability that haunts you, these Michigan boys will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride.

You can catch Patrick Davy (guitar, vocals), Adam Padden (bass) and Will Shattuck (drums) tonight in New York City at 8pm playing at the popular venue, Pianos, on the Lower East Side. Their latest album, Slow Sad, is also available online.

Tell the Broke-Ass readers who you are.

We are Patrick Davy and The Ghosts hailing from bustling metropolis of Detroit, Michigan.

How did you guys get together?

We met through mutual friends and bands.

Describe your sound in five words or less.

Who let the dogs out?

Break down the creative process that you guys go through when making a song.

Step 1.  Heartbreak

Step 2.  Self Medication (whiskey)

Step 3.  Song is born.

You name Led Zepplin, U2 and Radiohead as some of your musical influences. Where in your music do you feel that their impact has been most evident?

Definitely, in the aural aspects.

What’s your favorite thing about New York? Do you have any specific restaurants, bars or sites you HAVE to go see?

Well, Pianos, the place we play at [Wednesday, August 22nd], we gotta make it to the show. I think we’re a little too broke to do anything else.

How do you prepare for a big show? What are doing the night before a show? Are there any pre-show rituals? And what can the audience expect at the show?

Same three steps as question 4. We go through the process quickly.

What’s next for the band? (i.e. plug your next show, album, etc.)

We have a show [tonight,Wednesday, August 22nd] in NYC.  We have a new record coming out in the fall with some shows in Detroit. Then we’ll be looking to come back to NYC and a few other cities. You can stalk us at http://PatrickDavyandTheGhosts.com

If you were stranded on a desert island, what are three things you’d take with you?

1.  Whiskey

2.  Women

3.  Lafayette Coney Island

Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Do you have any money saving tips for aspiring musicians trying to survive? How do you save money on the road?

Work your dick off and use whiskey to keep hunger at bay.

Where do you live now and what are some good cheap/fun things to do in that area?

Hanging on the beach on Belle Isle.

What do you refuse to spend money on?

No expenses spared in pursuit of the dream…we work a lot.  🙁

What is the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought and how did that make you feel?

The band’s Mercedes.

What’s the best deal you’ve ever gotten?

Our killer rehearsal space.

If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?

Your love.

What’s one GOOD thing about not having a ton of money?

We wouldn’t know.

Enrique Grijalva - Mr. Minimum Wage

My father came, my mother saw...and I conquered. I encourage children to do drugs, I buy alcohol for teenagers, and I drink beer with the homeless. In my spare time, I attend art galleries for the FREE booze while rubbing elbows with modish elephants. I also hammer six-inch nails into small penises. Stuart knighted me as Broke-Ass King of New York. You've been warned.
