RedUP presents Red Umbrella Diaries: New Beginnings FREE Tomorrow Night at Happy Ending
Audacia Ray is the founder and director of the Red Umbrella Project (RedUP), former executive editor of Spread Magazine and a former sex worker. Yes, Audacia Ray is one many people in this world that have used their assets to make a living. And within the last decade she has aligned herself with such people in this workforce community, helping “[amplify] the voices of people who have done transactional sex, through media, storytelling, and advocacy programs.” RedUP thinks of themselves as “a small and feisty New York-based organization that is run by and for our community of people who trade sex for things they need.”
One of the many ways they help former or current sex workers is through their storytelling program, the Red Umbrella Diaries. Each month sex trade workers gather at the Lower East Side’s Happy Ending (how appropriate) to share true stories in front of an audience. This FREE event allows for participants to have their stories documented for the RedUP’s podcast (which is available on iTunes for FREE).
Tomorrow night you can skip Fashion’s Night Out and experience this unique event for FREE at Happy Ending. Doors open at 7pm and the event will last from 8-10pm. You have to be 21 and over to attend, and keep in mind that 15% of the bar’s tab will be supporting RedUP’s storytelling workshop. RedUP’s newest members: Niesha Davis, Savannah Hornback, Melissa Petro and Daisy McCloud will be sharing their stories for the night’s theme of “New Beginnings.” The event will be hosted by the head lady in charge herself, Audacia Ray.
For more information about the RedUP project, the Red Umbrella Diaries, their writing workshops and their activist projects, feel free to visit their website HERE and show your support for these neglected workers.
