The show begins with clowns (not the creepy kind) cavorting through the crowd in the cheerful red and white striped tent on Beale Street, inciting giggles from kids and adults alike. Calvin Kai Ku, Jamie Conventry, and Natasha Kaluza set the tone for San Francisco’s own homegrown Circus Bella and its new production, STARLIGHT: Winter Circus Spectacular.

This intimate one-ring circus has cemented itself as a San Francisco tradition and is celebrating its 18th year under the guiding light of Abigail Munn. A talented cast delivers all the bendy, juggling, contorting, and trapezing in the manner of a good old-fashioned circus with a modern look. Assisted by the Circus Bella Band, which boasts excellent comedic timing, some of the best circus acts in the country come together to create a cohesive work of art. Easily viewed from all angles, this immersive production delivers warmth and charisma in equal measure.
“Now, more than ever, we all need opportunities to laugh with our neighbors,” said Circus Bella co-founder and director Abigail Munn. “We’re thrilled to be back with our resplendent tent at the East Cut, in the city I call home, and to be part of activating the city with arts and entertainment.”

Circus Bella is located on Beale Street at the East Cut Space. Photo provided by Circus Bella.
The show runs through January 4, with two performances on New Year’s Eve, complete with party hats, streamers, and Auld Lang Syne. Food and festive concessions are available onsite at the Gourmet Grotto and Greyhound Bar, part of the larger Crossing at East Cut space.
