On a sunny day at the Joe DiMaggio Bocce Ball courts in North Beach, Stuart and I decided to try our hand at the classic game known to the Italians as Bocce Volo.
The roots of Bocce Volo run all the way back to the ancient Roman Empire, and the modern game was brought to San Francisco by Italian immigrants well over a hundred years ago. It’s been played in backyards and parks next to the Saloons in North Beach since before Joe DiMaggio was just a bambino.
Bocce is the Italian word for ‘bowl’, and Volo comes from the Italian verb volare meaning ‘to fly’, referring to the technique of throwing a ball through the air in an attempt to knock away an opponent’s ball.
We figured there was no better way to play Bocce than with the fine folks of Volo Sports San Francisco, an adult sports league company that first began organizing games of Bocce Volo on the East Coast, and so named the company after the game.
So we dressed as intimidating as we could and challenged the professionals of Volo San Francisco to a duel.

Needless to say, after a hard-fought match, the pros at Volo Sports rolled over us, and so we licked our wounds and strolled to a local watering hole to wet our whistles together. Because although playing rec sports is a good way to compete and get exercise, it’s also an easy way to meet fun, friendly folks.
Whether you’re playing team Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, or just Bocce, after the game is through, most Volo leagues have a bar they go to afterward to socialize, play flip cup, and generally just mix it up with other players.
