In recent years, skateboarding’s popularity has soared and it’s even been included in the Olympics. No longer just for kids and teens, adults are increasingly interested in skateboarding for a variety of reasons beyond the fun experience they rightly see. For adults, skateboarding offers physical and mental health benefits, plus the social connection opportunities it offers can’t be denied. Fortunately, there is no ideal age, from children to adults it’s a sport for everyone and it’s never too late to start. San Francisco’s mild climate makes it a great place to learn for year-round skateboarding. How does skateboarding stack up to benefit you?

Physical and Mental Benefits

  • Skateboarding is a great workout for heart health and cardiorespiratory fitness, helping to support prolonged exercise to stay in shape.

  • Strengthening leg and core muscles of the abdominals for balance, lower back for stability, and obliques for vital rotation movements are significant skateboarding advantages.

  • Stress reduction is another perk, as skateboarding helps you relax to focus on movement and balance and not worries as you ride.

Social Connections

  • The sense of shared community encourages teamwork that connects people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Skateboarding events can foster the camaraderie that builds friendships within a supportive network.

  • In spite of how it seems, skateboarding is not a solo sport, it builds teamwork. Riders help each other learn tricks, share tips, and cheer each other on.

Creative Expression

  • The artistic outlet inherent in skateboarding culture allows for personal style and creativity, as shown in customized boards and tricks.

  • Adults learn new tricks and increase their skills as they gain confidence in the sport. This personal growth makes it easier to engage with other skateboarders and become part of the community.

  • Here is a sport that’s good for the planet and needs no gas or electricity to move. Count helping the planet while staying fit as another skateboarding benefit.

Rob Skate Academy

Although adult skateboarding lessons are not listed on its website, the Rob Skate Academy does offer skateboarding lessons for adults! Headquartered in San Leandro with another location in Concord, this spot is a gem for East Bay residents.

Rob Skate Academy’s private one-on-one sessions, at 30 or 60-minutes, is the optimal choice to introduce the fundamentals of skateboarding. It’s also a great option for more advanced riders looking to increase their trick skills and boost their overall knowledge up a notch or two. Private lessons are offered at both the San Leandro and Concord locations.

If group lessons sound right for you, Rob Skate Academy offers adult group classes at the Concord location. This option is a weekly 1-hour class on Saturdays, 6 PM-7 PM. The benefit of group lessons for newer and intermediate riders is to learn while meeting other like-mined skateboarding enthusiasts! This is a welcoming community. No experience is required for either option and equipment is provided.

Note: Rob Skate Academy operates under a membership model at both locations. The first private lesson doesn’t require membership and is considered a trial. Membership is explained through this link. For additional questions call the office at (510) 894-5303.
