CONVERSATIONS WITH GAY ELDERS

In collaboration with the San Francisco Public Library and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, YBCA is proud to host filmmaker David Weissman to share a segment of his project, Conversations with Gay Elders, including New Yorker Daniel Maloney who was a principal dancer with Martha Graham in the 1970s.

ART WALK + BLOCK PARTY

As with the six previous years, this free event will bring over 75 artists in some 25 locations on two blocks, 6th Street from Market to Howard Streets. The art walk will feature a range of art exhibits and live performances in galleries, bars, restaurants, a laundromat, coffee shops and a number of other storefronts.

35TH ANNUAL LEAP SANDCASTLE CLASSIC

Northern California’s largest sandcastle competition that supports an important cause: bringing essential arts programs into local schools. This unique sandcastle competition, nonprofit fundraiser, and community event brings over 3,000 people to San Francisco’s Ocean Beach every year to build super-sized sand sculptures with local students.

BEST FOOD WRITING 2017

Editor Holly Hughes will moderate a panel of food writers: Kenji Lopez-Alt, Luke Tsai, Rachel Levin, Daniel Duane, and Liz Weil. For seventeen years, this anthology has served up the cream of each years crop of food writing, from legendary figures like Anthony Bourdain to lauded chefs like Alice Waters. The 2017 edition promises to continue in that tradition with a dynamic mix of writers; from seasoned journalists and authors to star chefs and up-and-coming bloggers.

A SCREENING OF “DR. STRANGELOVE” AT THE LAB

A chap named Mike attended the Henry Miller Library’s movie finale in August. Mike bought a raffle ticket and won the grand prize: A private screening of the movie of his choice! Mike is a great guy. THE 2017 HONK NYC FESTIVAL

Legendary actor Bill Murray surprises again with his versatility, teaming up with acclaimed German cellist Jan Vogler for “New Worlds,” a spirited evening of music and literature presented by Dorn Music, one night only at Carnegie Hall. In this rare live appearance, Murray – as both singer and narrator – brings his irresistible charm and wit to songs by Foster, Gershwin, Mancini, and Bernstein, as well as readings of classic American poetry and prose, in dialog with Vogler’s singing Stradivari cello. The performance features Murray and Vogler with violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez.
