The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

If your January wasn’t as eventful as you had hoped it would be, here’s a list of the big fairs, launches, marches, fundis, parties and all around art happenings.  Start the weekend at one or two of the art fairs happening we’ve heard about in San Francisco, then make your way over to an exhibition opening in Oakland.  Who said the holiday season was over?  It seems like everyone in the arts scene is still celebrating!

FOG DESIGN + ART
San Francisco’s most popular art fair FOG returns for its fifth edition with 53 galleries that now include Perrotin and Hauser & Wirth.  On Friday, there will be a young Bay Area artists talk with Koak, Muzae and Sofie Ramos.  And on Saturday, Tom Sachs and Adam Savage (of Mythbusters) will be in conversation with an associate curator of the SFMOMA.

UNTITLED ART FAIR

Fresh off their fair in Miami, Untitled SF is bringing more than 60 leading art exhibitors from 10 different countries, an art books exhibit (very cool), it’s own live Podcast (with lot’s artsy & interesting guests, and a lot diverse, emerging, artwork to SF’s Pier 35 waterfront.

This fair prides itself in displaying contemporary art from all disciplines, and often more emerging and mid-career artwork than the glossy FOG, which gives this art fair more of a, ‘what the future of art holds’ appeal, and makes it feel like more of a ‘fair’ than a ‘market’.  Curator Juana Berrío of Kiria Koula gallery in the Mission, and dope Bay Area-based nonprofits like 500 Capp Street Foundation, Artadia, Berkeley Art Museum/ Pacific Film Archive, Chinese Culture Center, and For-Site are collaborating.
