Bake Muffins & Feed the Homeless on National Muffin Day
Do you know the Muffin Man? If you are ever on Market Street, in the Tenderloin, in the Mission, on Haight Street, or near the Civic Center, you might have seen him around, distributing delicious home-baked muffins to hungry folk. For the past five years or so, Jacob Kaufman has been baking muffins and handing them out to people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco every week. Once a year, he and his Atlanta-based muffin partner Julia Levy invite folks across the country to join them in baking and giving. For each person who bakes and gives, Jacob will donate $10 to charities that address homelessness (Project Homeless Connect and Family Promise). This year, to an extent, his parents will match, his former employer (Smithline PC) will match, and his current employer (Google) will match, meaning that for each participant, that’s up to $40 to help those in need! Julia and Jacob call this grand event “National Muffin Day.” This year, National Muffin Day will take place on Sunday, February 24th.
Over the past few years, National Muffin Day has really taken off, with stories in CNN, Inside Edition, ABC, and the SF Chronicle. The number of participants has grown each year, with 235 people baking and giving last year. This year Julia’s and Jacob’s goal is to get 300 people baking and giving…that’s $12,000 for charity!
Participation in National Muffin Day is easy, peasy, lemon-squeezy!
–First, bake muffins on February 24th! Use a favorite recipe or try something new. Also, baking is more fun when you do it with others, so grab your friends, family, coworkers, and kids–have a party! For each additional person you bring on, that’s another $40!
–Then, hand them out to people experiencing homelessness in your city. If you need tips on best practices, see this video featuring Jacob.
–Take a photo of your baking and giving efforts and post it to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #givemuffins. If you participate with friends, make sure to get them all in the picture so we can count them.
–Join the Muffin Movement by joining the Facebook event, checking out our web page NationalMuffinDay.org, and following us on Instagram (@natlmuffinday).
–Spread the word! Tell your significant other, cousin, hairdresser, boss, milkman, kid’s teacher, and everybody else you know about National Muffin Day! We can always use more Muffinteers!
