Boooo! ‘The Princess Bride’ Cast Reunites to Kick Trumperdinck Out of Office

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

“The Princess Bride” is that movie that works every time you need a lift, like comfort food for weary souls in inconceivable times. So, in this hellscape we call 2020, what could be more nourishing than a cast reunion reading?

How about a reunion used as a fundraiser for Wisconsin Democrats in an effort to vote out the one and only Trumperdinck before he causes further ultimate suffering? How about a reunion reading that pisses off Sen. Ted Cruz? Ah, so many things wrapped in one.

On Sunday at 4 p.m., Mandy Patinkin, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Billy Crystal and many others will come together for a script reading of one of the most legendary cult classic movies of all time. According to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, which organized the event in collaboration with Act Blue, the livestream will air just once with a plea to the public to make a donation in any amount.

Patinkin, more lovingly known as the Inigo Montoya, spoke out about the event on his Facebook page and addressed some of those right-wing fans who, like Cruz, are put off by the event.

He wrote:

“To those upset about this event raising money for The Democratic Party Of Wisconson I’m sorry you feel that way. The Princess Bride for me, among many things, is a tale of good, kindness and humanity overcoming greed, ego and tyranny. For me, it could not be more fitting to come together as a cast in support of getting Trumperdink out of office and putting this country on a kinder path closer to it’s ideals we so often espouse.”

People can RSVP for the livestream script reading and post-Q&A session by visiting WisDems.org/PrincessBride and can make donations on the Act Blue event site.

Patinkin and crew come through 33 years after the film’s release, at a time we need them most to help us recall better days filled with kindness, beauty and bravery. “The Princess Bride” is a lesson about love and sacrifice in a fantastic tale of misfits uniting to make sure love trumps hate. But maybe more than anything, it’s Westley’s words we most need to hear again:

“We are men of action. Lies do not become us.”
