The Unreal Garden

Decibels Film Festival (Launch Party Tonight!)

Through 11/7 | Virtually and in-person at various SF theaters | All-Access Shorts Pass: $65

Decibels Film Festival works to bring the mosh pit, dance party, rap battle and sing-along to your local indie theater and living room by showcasing the diversity of music subcultures found on-screen. Decibels Film Festival will present 25 films playing on-demand online through 11/7. United Nations Association Film Festival

This one-night festival has two fantastic films on offer, tonight only! First on the lineup is Los Hermanos, the story of two musically-gifted brothers on either side of an intense geopolitical divide; then, revel in the music and the power of Fanny: The Right to Rock, about the life and times of trailblazing rock band, Fanny.

The Monster Mash Bash

Cat Club’s usual weekly party, 1984, gets overrun by the spooky spirit this week! Party all night with DJs Owen and Damon in everyone’s favorite old-school goth party space, and let the true darkness of the season (and plenty of cocktails!) flow through you.

Vehement: A Deviant Sideshow

9:00 pm – 11:00 pm | Berber Supper Club and Restaurant, 1516 Broadway Street | $30

This adults-only event is not for the fainthearted or easily-upset – expect nightmarish acts to provoke and unsettle guests into the late evening, a dark coven of queer oddities and performers that pushes boundaries. Wear your most avant-garde Halloween looks, because a runway show costume contest will be held to celebrate the most distorted, depraved, and grotesquely beautiful. Partial proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to the SF LGBT Center too, so you can feel saintly about your evening of sin!

Halloween Horror Benefit for West Oakland Punks with Lunch

This outdoor Halloween party for tiny humans 10 and under (plus their attendant adults, obviously!) features performances by festival favorites The Unique Derique, Caterpillar Puppets, and the Grammy-nominated Alphabet Rockers. Make ghoulishly good crafts at the Mexican Museum and Museum of African Diaspora tables, or get your creative juices flowing at the Children’s Creativity Museum station. And don’t forget to hitch a free ride on the LeRoy King Carousel before you finish your day!

Om Nom Nom Nonbinary Burlesque

Doors at 8:00 pm, show at 8:30 pm | Amado’s, 998 Valencia Street | $15-20

Om Nom Nom is a team of burlesque, drag, freak-show, and circus performers who all identify however they damn well please! They’re here to entertain all and break past the binary, tantalizing audiences with sexy moves and jaw-dropping acts. Starring hostex Nitrix Oxide, The Max Madame, Queer Al Skankovic, and more, this home-grown troupe (who are now known across the nation for their virtual shows) are once again making a triumphant return to live performance. Halloqueen Brunch

Manual Cinema’s Frankenstein

3:00 pm | Zellerbach Hall at UC Berkeley | $43-82

After the triumphant premiere of its mesmerizing video adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Manual Cinema returns at the behest of Cal Performances with a live adaptation of the same. Actors join puppeteers onstage, creating a silent animated film in real time with an immersive score performed live by four musicians – don’t miss this extraordinary blending of film and stage in this one-day-only matinee performance!

I knew nothing about this dude until halfway through quarantine when a friend mentioned him to me (thanks, Kitty!). Now I can’t get enough of his tongue-in-cheek electronic performances, and I’m super pumped that he’s coming to town as part of the official Outside Lands Nighttime Series (Note: At the time of writing, according to the ticket website there are only a few dozen tickets left, so get ‘em while ya can!)

Metalachi

The electric emotion of an 80’s power ballad…. The passionate yearning of a mariachi’s love song… Who knew they were a natural combo? Lizzie Locker has been an artist, entertainer, and “glamour girl” since birth. Since 2017, Lizzie has been writing professionally for small businesses, as well as creatively. She has published essays in VIE Magazine, and has written website and social media content for pole dance studios, afterschool programs, and reference sites. At the same time, Lizzie has also continued to develop her performance career at queer nightlife events across the Bay Area. She can be found both onstage and off, reading her stories aloud in bars, emceeing drag and burlesque shows, and producing arts events that defy genre and expectation.
