Some Cool Art Shows Happening in San Francisco
Many of us have been starved from seeing art in the flesh these past years. (Yes it will have been fucking years (plural) this March since the first lockdown began). So you may be thinking of breaking out and going to look at the beautiful and creative things that our artists and curators have produced lately. If so, you’re in luck, there are quite of few openings, art parties, shows, and exhibits happening in January.
Check with the venues about their own masking/vaccination policies.

MOVEMENTS
A Solo Art Show (& Dance Party) by Duser
Don’t miss the opening reception and dance party for SF artist (and DJ) Duser.
“Movements is a body of work, primarily created in 2021. It’s been super interesting to watch how these new pieces take shape. My approach to making art has completely flipped. Rather than conceptualizing each piece and theme, a looseness and trust in self has developed. For now, I have learned to let go and embrace what’s inside of me. I’m finding some things that I really like. Letting my mind go and develop the ideas in real time. The key ingredient here is trust in self. These Movements are happening in front of my eyes. Equally interesting, is watching this ‘philosophy” take shape in other areas of life.” – Duser

Seeing Gender
Look at the museum collection through a new lens with Seeing Gender, a focused selection that reveals the complexities and nuances of gender across Asian art.
Seeing Gender is the museum’s first exhibition to explore the collection through the lens of gender. “Gender and sexuality are so central to conversations our society is having today, especially in the Bay Area. With its diverse holdings, the museum can make an important contribution to that dialogue,” explain the curators, Maya Hara, Shinhwa Koo, Joanna Lee, and Megan Merritt.
These four emerging curators have placed artworks from disparate cultures and periods side by side to show how gender — whether fluid or fixed, divine or sensual, subversive or orthodox — is constructed, performed, and depicted throughout Asian art in provocative and inspiring ways.
The exhibition includes 16 works, ranging from a 1,000-year-old Indian sandstone sculpture to a 21st-century Korean work crafted from mulberry paper.
“Seeing Gender gives us the opportunity to both learn from the next generation of curators and use our collection to engage our audiences with topics that are relevant to their lives,” notes Chief Curator and Curator of Japanese Art Dr. Laura W. Allen.
