Little Piggy Sandwich Review:
Hot Chicken in the Mission

At least once a week I take a walk or ride my bike to a different San Francisco eatery for lunch.  I’ve been doing this on and off for about 15 years now. The only rules are that the place must be locally owned, must serve some kind of sandwich, wrap, or burger, AND it must feed a full-sized sandwich piggy for under $20!

The beauty of San Francisco is that no matter how many years I do this, there’s always a great new spot to checkout.

The Hot Chicken Craze of 2019

Remember when people waited in line at Popeye’s Chicken? On Divisadero in SF.  Image October 2019.

Food trends are a funny thing, they come and go just as often as fashion statements in our city. This most recent decade, ramen houses were popping up all over the city, then ahi poke bowls seemed to be everywhere, but in the last few years ‘hot chicken’ took over the lunchtime stage, and even surged across the country before the pandemic mostly killed ‘going out’ for lunch.

The hot chicken trend hit so hard that so-called foodies were waiting in line to get hot chicken at Popeye’s.  Fucking “Popeye’s…for the gram!?” (I mean, you could do worse).   But you also could have done a lot better. The local guys at Proposition Chicken had been serving hot chicken since 2013 and The Bird (opened 2016) were making far more delicious hot-fried chicken sandwiches long before Popeye’s massive marketing campaign. Hell, the pop-up and off-the-grid legends at HotBird opened up a brand new brick mortar location (in the Twitter building) the very same month that the Popeye’s craze hit San Francisco.  In 2019 people were waiting in line for chicken like it was brunch on a Sunday.

This little piggy has eaten at all the hot chicken spots listed above, they’re all delicious, even Popeye’s tastes good if you’re drunk and starving.

Anyway, it’s safe to say that hot fried chicken sammies are still hella popular in San Francisco, and today we’re going to talk about one of my favorites, the locally owned, the hot n heavy, WesBurger ‘N’ More!

Meet the NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN at WesBurger

Nashville Hot Chicken. 🔥🥵 @wesburger_n_more That’s buttermilk battered fried chicken dipped in Nashville spice mix.

Inside WesBurger looks a bit like a roadside diner from the 1960’s, almost like someone resuscitated a Howard Johnson’s.  The jukebox there is filled with tunes from Rooky Ricardo’s Record Shop, which is dope, the storefront is painted by local artist Jeremy Fish, and every time I go in there someone on staff is wearing a Giants hat.  You can’t get more ‘San Franciscan’ than this greasy motherfucker.

The hot chicken has a good heat to it, it burns low and lasts only a few seconds, so it doesn’t take over and kick you in the mouth.  They got a great fryer at WesBurger so the ‘crisp’ is right, and there’s garlic mayo and pickles on the sandwich too, so you never get a dry bite.  I got the jalapeno bacon mac n’ cheese as my side ($19.00 total before tax and tip).  The combination made me fall asleep on my keyboard after lunch, with a shit-eating grin on my face.

Wes is known for its smash burgers and tots, they’ll even put queso on your tots if you want, so stop in and fill up your little piggy arteries some time.  And if I missed your favorite hot chicken joint in the city, leave it in the comments, I’m always looking for a new trough to try.
