Tech Founder Appears To Advocate For Public Lynchings In San Francisco

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Bro, what the fuck?

I regularly make jokes about San Francisco being a dystopian nightmare and a lot of them go viral because there’s some truth to my jokes. Don’t get me wrong, San Francisco is very pretty and I like it more than I admit, but it’s also pretty dystopian.

I scour the internet regularly for news stories out of SF and the rest of the Bay Area that I can turn into content. As a result of this, I’m rarely shocked at the stupid shit people say or do in our little section of California. But then I was introduced to a woman so fucking tone deaf that she essentially is a content pinata. Her name is Michelle Tandler and she just “hypothetically” suggested that San Francisco should publicly hang drug dealers and other criminals as a way to prevent crime.

No, I’m not kidding.

She really said that shit. And what’s even crazier, a fair amount of people seemed to agree with her, I would post the comments, but she deleted the tweet after receiving backlash by what she refers to as the “far left.”

Because not advocating for the public lynching of drug dealers apparently makes you Karl fucking Marx.

I’m not going to get on my soapbox, but as prominent people get more comfortable saying truly fascist shit like this, we’re stepping closer to fascism. Her saying drug dealers should be hung is actual fascism. This isn’t a comedian making an offensive joke, or someone wanting their taxes cut at the expense of others, this is a direct endorsement of state violence with the intention of intimidation.

Ever since the death of Bob Lee, I’ve noticed an uptick in people advocating for everything from stop and frisk to genocide as a solution to drug addicts and dealers in SF on Twitter.

I know it’s just a tweet, and I know coming from me, as someone who has gone to war with people online over performative activism, this sounds hypocritical, but this shit actually scares me.

People make the mistake of thinking America is more advanced than it used to be, but that’s not entirely true. Our communication technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, but simultaneously, our education system has crumbled, our economy isn’t stable, and the rate at which misinformation moves now is staggering. It feels like we’re on the verge of entering a new Christian dark ages, but with iPhones and WiFi.

Before you go crazy, I’m not suggesting we censor the internet, or anyone, for that matter.

All I’m saying is that we have to prepare to combat far-right, and inhumane solutions to the symptoms of inequality facing us today.

Ever since the death of Bob Lee, I’ve noticed an uptick in people advocating for everything from stop and frisk to genocide as a solution to drug addicts and dealers in SF on Twitter.

As SF loses money from the tech exodus, negative publicity, and public pressure, I know they’re going to make a major pivot to the right. While I don’t think there will be public executions in SF anytime soon, I do think the most vulnerable are going to feel the brunt of public outrage for crimes they individually didn’t even commit.
