This Week’s Events

Tuesday, 6/27

Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth
6/27 | Alamo Drafthouse | 2550 Mission St, SF | 9:30 pm | $10

HELLRAISER III: HELL ON EARTH is a supremely ‘90s explosion of gothic horror opulence. This sequel retains everything we love about the HELLRAISER franchise (surrealist visuals, cosmic kinks, buckets of gloop) while leaning far more into what we’ve always wanted: unhinged carnage from Pinhead and his cenobite friends. This includes many deaths via compact disc. If there was ever a movie that earned its Motörhead theme song, it’s this one.

Thick + Buzzed Lightbeer
6/27 | Kilowatt Bar | 3160 16th St, SF | 8 pm | $13+

Thick is an energetic and rousing punk trio who rose out of New York’s D.I.Y. scene in the late 2010s.

Buzzed Lightbeer is a “Dionysian” fem punk trio out of San Francisco.

De Noche Los Gatos Son Pardos
6/27 | Roxie Theater | 3117 16th St, SF | 6 pm | free

Now in its sixth year, Locarno in Los Angeles is a unique showcase of cinematic highlights from each year’s Locarno Film Festival. With the support of the Swiss Consulate General of San Francisco, a taste of the Swiss festival will come to the Roxie when Acropolis Cinema and Locarno in Los Angeles present the local premiere of Valentin Merz’s stylish queer thriller De noche los gatos son pardos.

Grooblen w/ Mayya
6/28 | Rickshaw Stop | 155 Fell St, SF | 7 pm | $12-15

Through winding wormholes, interplanetary contemplations of change and recovery, heartbreak and heart-mend, avant psych-cabaret group Grooblen takes you on a turbulent and at-times ethereal spaceship ride through heavy rock hitter asteroids, wavy jazz-pop nebulas, and encounters with aliens of the psychedelic-cabaret kind.

Circles Around the Sun
6/28 | The Junction Beer Garden | 226 Shoreline Hwy, Mill Valley | 7 pm | $30

The band was initially formed with the purpose of creating music for “Fare Thee Well,” a series of reunion concerts played by the surviving members of the Grateful Dead. The response was so positive that they continued with follow-up projects even after undergoing a fundamental transition in 2019 with the death of lead guitarist Neal Casal.

Thursday, 6/29

High Sierra Music Festival
6/29-7/2 | Plumas County Fairgrounds | 204 Fairground Rd, Quincy | 10 am-10pm | $30+

Priding itself on a diverse musical lineup, one-of-a-kind intimate artist “playshops,” and legendary sit-ins and surprises throughout the weekend, High Sierra Music Festival remains the live music fan mainstay—a home away from home to pilgrimage to each year for a community experience of musical chances taken, all day and all night, on stages big and small. From the Grandstand Stage to the “don’t let out the air-conditioning” doors of the High Sierra Music Hall, festival-goers spend every day celebrating old traditions, as well as forging new ones each and every year.

Cory Hanson
6/29 | Bottom of the Hill | 1233 17th St, SF | 8 pm | $15-18

Insatiably in search of greener pastures, Cory draws with vampiric glee from the madness coursing through the world outside; a spiraling shitshow that’s reawakened a compulsion in him – an old ambition, even! – to crush brutality and elegance together into a fresh set of rocks to hail down upon us, with the sound of guitars through the speakers of luxury cars. Harmony leads are just the tip of the iceberg, but be quick – the guitars like to melt everything in their path!

Same Old Mistakes

Dumpstaphunk
6/29 | The Independent | 628 Divisadero St, SF | 8 pm | $32+

Dumpstaphunk stands out amongst New Orleans’ best, cementing themselves as one of the funkiest bands to ever arise from the Crescent City. Born on the Jazz & Heritage Festival stage, and descended from Neville and Meters family bloodlines, these soldiers of funk ignite a deep, gritty groove that dares listeners not to move. Their performances combine ingenious musicianship through complex funk, rock, and jazz arrangements accompanied by soulful melodies and Big Easy traditions.

Atomic Comic
7/2 | Z Space | 450 Florida St, SF | 8 pm | $20-55

Through hyper-physical comedy, quick-witted repartee and sweet, goofy musical numbers, Moore tells the horrible-hilarious story of their recent journey through the death of a parent, a crushing breakup and surviving cancer by finding the humor in all that humanity! As a lifelong writer, actor and circus clown Moore chose to use every skill they’d acquired to embrace & outright celebrate their unbelievable bad luck by careening furiously from their mouthy, inappropriate therapist (played with fabulous raging candor by TV Star Sharon Gless) to doing cancer treatments “in character” to trying to rebuild a performing career with their fellow comics during the Covid lockdown. Miraculously, Moore was saved from total despair by believing in the Carrie Fisher mantra: Take your broken heart and make it into art. It also helps to laugh and rage with your friends!
