Tuesday, 8/8

BAMBDFEST 2023 INTERNATIONAL: (un)belong(ed)
8/8-9/1 | BAM House | 1540 Broadway Ave, Oakland | 6 pm | $0-150 sliding scale donations

 

BAMBD CDC is producing its 4th international festival, BAMBDFEST. This year’s festival theme is “(un)belong(ed).” The festival, which began in 2019, has become a biennial event after it wrapped in 2021. This festival has evolved into a hybrid happening with in-person, and virtual events. Most events are free but encourage donation. There are some amazing ticketed opportunities to support the festival and BAMBD CDC.

The majority of in-person events will be hosted at the newly acquired BAMBD CDC headquarters, BAM House, previously the Flight Deck.

A Journey into Afro-Peruvian Instruments + Rhythms
8/8 | Freight & Salvage | 2020 Addison St, Berkeley | 5:45 | $25

 

Delve into the Afro-Peruvian roots of some of the world’s most popular percussion instruments! In this workshop, Master Afro-Peruvian percussionist Marcos Mosquera will present the main Afro-Peruvian percussion instruments, the cajón, cajita, congas, bongos, and quijada (donkey’s jaw), while exploring all-traditional rhythms and patterns like lando, zamacueca, alcatraz, inga, son de los diablos, and estuve cobando. Students should bring one of the instruments listed above, no prior experience with Afro-Peruvian music needed.

Caleb Hearon

Caleb Hearon is a comedian at whom nobody has ever been mad. He currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is a writer for Netflix’s spinoff of their hit show Big Mouth which is entitled Human Resources. He recently shot the TBS pilot Space, where he will be a series regular and will appear in Ally Pankiw’s feature directorial debut Brooke & Sam.


Night Waves
8/8 | Aquarium of the Bay | 7-10 pm | $40+

 

DJ Lombriz (aka Mario A Ortiz) will take you on a musical journey from the 80s to the 90s to the latest and greatest Latin and English Top 40 hits. Night Waves at the Aquarium will be a special kind of party. Put on your dancing shoes. Let your hair down. We’ll have food from Taco Cantina and Happy Cow Creamery.

Summer Singles Mixer

Mo Amer
8/9 | Cobb’s Comedy Club | 915 Columbus Ave, SF | 7:30 pm | $41

Mo is a stand-up comedian and writer, who in October 2018, debuted his acclaimed Netflix special The Vagabond. Most recently, Mo can be seen as a series regular on the hit Hulu original series Ramy, which premiered in April of 2019. Mo tours extensively with Dave Chappelle, having performed well over 600 shows together, independently Mo has sold out shows in over two dozen countries worldwide.



Messer Chups, The Volcanics, Sid Presley

While Messer Chups’ mostly instrumental sound is hard to neatly categorize, it’s safe to say that it would be embraced by fans of rockabilly, horror punk, vintage surf records, Italian slasher films, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Pulp Fiction, lounge music, the theremin, The Cramps, and the theme song from The Munsters. Their catchy music combines surf, vintage Russian melodies, rare film samples from the 50s and 60s, scratchy historical recordings, and lounge loops.



Thursday, 8/10

No Vacation w/ Sour Widows
8/10 | Cal Academy of Sciences | 55 Music Concourse Dr, SF | 7:30 pm | $22

 

Kick off Outside Lands weekend at Nightlife Live with some dreamy jams by indi pop band No Vacation and an opening set by a guitar-wielding trio, Sour Windows. Plus a DJ set by Cuffin All Thangs and Mellow Sessions with Late Aster.

 

 

Adrienne Iapalucci

Adrienne is a comedian, writer, and performer based in New York. As a stand-up, Adrienne is a JFL New Faces alum. She won the first ever People’s Choice award at the New York Comedy Festival and made her debut on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Her Degenerates Netflix special premiered on NYE 2020 alongside Nikki Glaser, Ms. Pat, and others.

Jinkx Monsoon

Outside Lands Music Festival

Outside Lands (formerly known as the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival) is a music, food and art festival held annually in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  Outside Lands 2023 will mark the 15th anniversary of the festival, with a stacked lineup of performers as well as stellar food and drink offerings.

Sylvester, The Mighty Real

Sylvester was San Francisco’s very own disco diva, a Black, flamboyant, gender-fluid artist and activist who soared to international fame in the 1970s with his pioneering blend of disco beats and gospel vocals. In 2019, his song “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.

In loving homage to Sylvester, Eye Zen’s newest performance project will transport audiences back to the places where Sylvester lived and performed, to the era of love-ins and be-ins, to the counterculture revolution of the 1970s and its backlash in the 80s as HIV/AIDS gripped the nation.


Young Franco

Young Franco’s 2022 run of singles have clocked over 5 million streams and consecutively landed in the top 10 of Australia’s biggest indie playlist Front Left. This year’s releases have also seen him secure the cover of New Dance Beats as well as plentiful support across all DSPs as well as adds to rotation on Triple J.

Shakespeare in the Park

Shakespeare in the Park is celebrating 41 years of free, in-person outdoor theater performances in Redwood City, this year featuring Cymbeline, Shakespeare’s epic romantic adventure. San Francisco Shakespeare Festival brings its production for 3 weekends, from August 12th through August 27th, and offers 6:00pm shows on both Saturdays and Sundays. Our relaxing outdoor setting provides an opportunity to see high quality, professional theater, free of charge. Treat yourself to some Shakespeare this season, for a moment that is sure to bring you a touch of The Bard!

Intro to Bundle Dyeing with Natural Dyes, Plants, & Flowers

In this class, we will introduce you to the beautiful art of natural bundle dyeing! Gain an understanding of how to work with the many vibrant colors that can be extracted from natural materials such as fresh and dried flowers, food waste, trees, plants, and more! You’ll have a chance to explore and practice the bundle dyeing process on a few different types of fabric, including silk and cotton. Each student will learn how to place the dyestuffs, wrap the fabric, and steam the bundle on a stove top to create their own unique, colorful patterns. Curious how a certain plant or flower may look when bundle dyed? Bring it in and try it!!

 

Souls of Mischief

A funky introspection was clear to see. This was Oakland, California in 1993. …Now, 30 years on, 93 to 23, still infinity. Still hectic out there. Time flies but Soul sare still chillin. “Now you have younger generations who were born in ’93,” says Phesto. “They’re like, ‘ ’93 ’til infinity.’ It means so many different things to so many different people.”
