After 13 weeks, the Summer of Music is coming to a close with just two more weekends of free music around the city. Noise Pop and Civic Joy Fund’s free concert series has brought 500+ performances in 8 neighborhoods to the city this summer, and there are only a few left! Saturday, September 23rd & 30th, experience free music all around the city from independent artists, hosted by small local businesses!

Toward The FUN(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow

Steve Earle returns to the Herbst Theatre to host an intimate songwriters circle, inviting bluegrass legend Peter Rowan, singer-songwriter John Craigie, the incomparable Rickie Lee Jones, rising Bay Area rock stars Sour Widows, and a surprise musical guest, to gather in support of Camp Winnarainbow—a circus & performing arts haven for young people, founded in 1975 by Hippie icons Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney. Join us in celebrating the transformative role Camp Winnarainbow has played in the lives of generations of young people with this special night of music.

Fort Mason Center Art Walk 2023

Join Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture (FMCAC), FOR-SITE, Haines Gallery, Museo Italo Americano, SF Camerawork, and the San Francisco Children’s Art Center to celebrate the Fall art season with an evening Art Walk on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Art Walk opens at 5:00 p.m. and features pop-up artist and curator talks across campus, opera aria performances, opening receptions, a free documentary film screening about Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, an art workshop in Landmark Building C, and a new public art commission at Landmark Building B, Pier 2, and the Festival Pavilion at Pier 3. Check in at the kiosk at Landmark Building C to obtain maps and drink tickets.

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, director, and muse Niia appears and disappears with all of the silent pomp and circumstance of a ghostly succubus or a nightclub chanteuse in some Lynchian fever dream on a spaceship. At the same time, shes not just on screenNo, shes also behind-the-camera, pulling the strings, and playing god with the emotions of any voyeur curious enough to listen, watch, and feel. Shes completely tapped in, yet wholly removed from this world. Rather, shes sequestered in her own kingdom of doubt, anxiety, lust, karma, and sense of self.

Hannah Jadagu

Hailing from Mesquite, Texas and now residing in New York, 20 year-old Hannah Jadagu recorded and produced her early music all through her iPhone 7, using Garageband iOS, an iRig, microphone, and guitar. The resourcefulness paid off, earning Hannah early praise for her What Is Going On? and its prerelease singles.

Crankie Making Workshop Day One

A crankie is a scroll illustrating a song (or story), in a box with a crank which turns the scroll. Leslie Keir will lead a collaborative crankie making workshop, in which participants will work on a scroll illustrating a ballad which will be taught by Sheila Kay Adams. The finished crankie will be shown during the 9/22/23 Berkelely Old Time Music Convention – Night 3 – Concert at the Freight & Salavage, with the workshop participants doing the singing (singing is optional). For adults and children.

Ralph Barbosa

One of the shyest attention hogs to ever do comedy, Barbosa’s laid-back style combined with sharp timing makes for a hilarious comedy set. From his Don’t Tell Comedy set reaching over a million views on YouTube to making his HBO and Comedy Central debut in 2022, Barbosa is rocking stages all over. As a young comic starting out, he was the 2019 winner of the Funniest comic in TX competition, and in 2021 he went on to win the New York Latino Film Festival Stand Up competition.

Off the Grid: Filipino Food Fest

Immerse yourself in Filipino culture through pop-ups, food trucks, and special experiences that celebrate the rich flavors and traditions of the Philippines. As a major hub for the Filipino community, the Bay Area is home to some of the most innovative Filipino food in the country. Creators include Barya Kitchen with their fried adobo wings and lumpia, Street Stix with their cult-favorite shrimp balls, plus Senor Sisig and She Got Rolls.

Parktoberfest

Park Chalet turns into an old world village buzzing with authentic German music by Alpine Sound and beer flowing into custom 1 liter steins (for you to take home!). 2023 HUMP! Film Festival

Prezident Brown with Reggae Angels

Prezident Brown launched his musical career at the age of fourteen, when he began dee-jaying for the Sound King Stereo Mix at the Bamboo Lounge. Initially known as Junior Ranking, he was dubbed “Slim Brown” by dee-jay Nicodemus. When he recorded his debut single in 1988 Prezident Brown was named, “Dancehall Doctor”. The late Jack Ruby, producer of Burning Spear’s albums, “Marcus Garvey”, and “Man In The Hills”, bestowed the title, “Prezident”, upon him.

Tracing Passages

Tracing Passages harmoniously weaves together the diverse narratives woven by these three artists, sparking a dialogue about the intrinsic connection between beauty, fragility, and the passage of time. 2nd Annual Roller Boogie

ChoreoFest

A two-weekend festival of site-specific work, the Yerba Buena Gardens ChoreoFest showcases the extravagant creativity, diversity and vibrancy of the Bay Area dance scene. Happening Saturday, September 23 and Saturday, September 30.

World premiere of “Mission Rebel No. 1”

Mission Rebel No.1: Looking for Reverend Jesse James is a multi-layered production created by musician and composer David James. Inspired by a youth empowerment organization founded by his late father, Mission Rebel No.1 is a musical exploration into the complicated life and radical times of the Rev. Jesse James. This newly commissioned work brings together original compositions by David James, along with archival audio, photographs, and news clips about the “groovy rebellion” of Black and Latine youth in the Mission District of the 1960’s-70’s. Mission Rebel No.1 draws from the soulful and funky music of his father’s era.

The 9/24 Gilman Lot Party

The legendary live music venue 924 Gilman — launchpad for alt-rock/punk band Green Day — has assembled a powerhouse lineup of bands to rock the crowd, featuring headliners Neverlyn and Sad Snack, supported by Rymodee, The Helens, Said Sara, Strange Light, Plush Palace, Red Wood, and Hard Party. In addition, the Gilman Brewing Company’s house band — featuring employees of the brewery — will open the festival.

Folsom Street Fair 2023

Intro to Bundle Dyeing with Natural Dyes, Plants, & Flowers

n this class, we will introduce you to the beautiful art of natural bundle dyeing! Gain an understanding of how to work with the many vibrant colors that can be extracted from natural materials such as fresh and dried flowers, food waste, trees, plants, and more! You’ll have a chance to explore and practice the bundle dyeing process on a few different types of fabric, including silk and cotton. Each student will learn how to place the dyestuffs, wrap the fabric, and steam the bundle on a stove top to create their own unique, colorful patterns. Curious how a certain plant or flower may look when bundle dyed? Bring it in and try it!! Each student will leave with their own batch of beautiful bundle dyed items.

Thelma & Louise
