400-year-old Brewery Opens First U.S. Taproom in Berkeley

Everyone knows that when it comes to drinking pilsner beer in the Bay Area, there’s one name that comes to mind first.

In 2004, a group of enterprising American craft brewers discovered the Trumer Brauerei in Salzburg, Austria. Instead of shipping Trumer Pils from Austria to the United States, those brewers built a sister brewery in Berkeley, California.

This is how Americans can get 400 years of Austrian Brewing tradition, brewed fresh daily in Berkeley.  The Trumer Berkeley team upholds the original Trumer Pils recipe by using the same hops, malt, and proprietary yeast as its sister brewery in Salzburg.

“When the beer is good, you import the beer. When the beer is great, you import the brewery!”

Trumer Pils has been awarded eighteen Gold Medal wins at the most prestigious international beer competitions, making Trumer Pils the most awarded craft pilsner in the world. Trumer Pils has been recognized by the European Beer Star, the Great American Beer Festival, and the World Beer Cup.

At the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) the world’s largest annual beer competition, comprised of over 2,600 entries from more than 400 breweries in 26 countries.  Trumer Pils won four consecutive gold medals for the Best German Style Pilsner.

German-trained Trumer Brewmaster, Lars Larson opens a traditional beer barrel.  After obsessing over the same beer for more than a decade, you could say he’s got this pilsner brewing thing down to a science.

Now the Trumer Brauerei on Fourth Street in Berkeley is celebrating the grand opening of its newly renovated taproom with an Oktoberfest party for the ages.  Broke-Ass Stuart is slated to emcee the event that will be complete with traditional Bavarian food, live music from Polkageist West, stein hoisting + costume contests, and of course, plenty of Bavarian-style beer.

For you beer enthusiasts, Trumer will be pouring 3 different varieties:

A commemorative Oktoberfest Beer – a Märzen style, served by Bavarian-style keg, and a standard keg while supplies last.

Keller Pils – an unfiltered version of their original base beer, a German-style pilsner.

And of course Trumer Pils – their original and world award-winning German-style pilsner.

There will be 3 different traditional Oktoberfest contests too:

Beer Maiden Look Alike Contest: Show their logo some love and help bring their Beer Maiden to life! Dress up in your best interpretation of the Trumer Beer Maiden.

Stein Hoisting: Test your strength in this traditional Bavarian contest to see how long you can hold up a 1L stein!

Best Dressed: Have an outfit already picked out, or an amazing costume? Enter their best dressed contest and the crowd will decide!

The celebration is FREE WITH RSVP, but there’s also great commemorative stein, beer, and food packages if you like.
