Woman Trapped Under Cruise Autonomous Car In San Francisco
A woman was trapped under a Cruise car on Market Street in San Francisco, requiring the San Francisco Fire Department to use the jaws of life to save her. According to Cruise, the autonomous vehicle wasn’t at fault for the accident – as the pedestrian was “launched” in front of the car after a being struck by a driver who fled the scene.
The victim fortunately survived, but suffered “multiple traumatic injuries” accord to SFFD.
(1/3) At approximately 9:30 pm on October 2, a human-driven vehicle struck a pedestrian while traveling in the lane immediately to the left of a Cruise AV. The initial impact was severe and launched the pedestrian directly in front of the AV.

Cruise released this statement:
“At approximately 9:30 p.m. on October 2, a human-driven vehicle struck a pedestrian while traveling in the lane immediately to the left of a Cruise AV. The initial impact was severe and launched the pedestrian directly in front of the AV. The AV then braked aggressively to minimize the impact. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, and at the request of the police the AV was kept in place. Our heartfelt concern and focus is the wellbeing of the person who was injured and we are actively working with police to help identify the responsible driver.”
According to authorities, this is the worst incident they’ve seen involving a self-driving car and it doesn’t appear that the police have a suspect in custody for the hit-and-run.
This incident occurred during ongoing debates about whether or not autonomous vehicles belong in San Francisco due to safety and economic concerns. Artificial Intelligence is the stuff of dreams and nightmares. There’s a part of me that longs to live in a sci-fi utopia where the needs of the common man are easily met by the innovations of modern technology. That shit is cool. But we live in America, and we already have enough to help our citizens and we choose not to. My concerns with self-driving cars have little to do with anecdotal safety concerns, but with economic impact. This may surprise you, but I don’t think this incident, if the report is to be believed, was the Cruise car’s fault.
Regardless of whose fault it was, let’s hope the victim makes a speedy recovery.
