Bay Area stand-up comedian and founder of #HellaFunny, Stroy Moyd is opening a new comedy club and cocktail bar called The Function in San Francisco this spring!  The location is where ‘The Hot Spot’ used to be on Market St. (you know, that amazing dive that used to sell a lotto scratcher, a beer, and a shot for 6$).

But Stroy has big plans for the two-story space that includes an excellent bar program, dance parties, art-covered walls, and of course, lots of hilarious comedy shows.

“Get ready for DJ parties, dance nights, art exhibitions, comedy, silent discos, and more. The grand opening of The Function SF is set for May 1st. #HellaFunny” – Stroy Moyd

BrokeAssStuart.com asked ‘The Functions’ owner Stroy Moyd some questions about the new comedy club and scene he’s creating:

BAS: Will all #HellaFunny shows be there or will you still be doing some at other venues?

Stroy: “Currently, we produce about 25 weekly shows. We plan on moving the majority of the shows to the Function. We will still keep our shows at the cannabis clubs, strip club shows and Cobbs and Battery. We aim to produce two comedy shows a night. 7 nights a week.”

BAS: How many comedy shows will be there a week? Will there be other entertainment? A cool bar program?

“14 weekly shows a week. Every month we will have a different theme of drinks. For example, for the month of May, we may do “A Taste of Maui.” Having a bunch of cool tiki and Hawaii-themed drinks. Then another month we will do “South American Cervesa fiesta” with different beers from South American and so on.  Also, all of our comedy shows will be themed, like: Crazy Funny Asians – DESI comedy night – Kosher Comedy Night – Black Laughs Matter – Tindervention – hellasingle – laugh gpt etc.”

BAS: Who are your partners on the project?

“The designer who designed Bar Fluxus will design it, it’s not going to be a dive bar, more of a comedy club that turns into a fancy cocktail lounge.

The whole theme of The Function is freedom of speech. We want comedians to be able to perfect their crafts without being censored Going to have a bunch of revolutionary figures painted on the wall Public enemy, Tupac, Huey P. Newton, Dave Chappelle.”

BAS: How and when did #HellaFunny start?

“HellaFunny started in 2012. No white boys wanted to put me On their show so I started producing my own shows lol Ten years later I got my own club!

My goal is to showcase the diversity of comedic talent in the Bay. White, black, gay, nonbinary, Egyptian, Christian, Trans, Palestinian, and more!  Everyone is welcome.”  –  Stroy Moyd.
