Summer festival season is fully underway in The Bay. The historic Mountain Theatre in Mill Valley will be hosting Sound Summit on Saturday, September 7 for a full day music festival featuring an incredible line up and stunning bay views. Headliners include rock and folk legends Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile. Joining them will be the retro-soul sounds of The California Honeydrops and rock and roll powerhouses such as Grace Bowers & The Hodge Podge and Skyway Man.

Tickets officially went on sale on June 7th and I wouldn’t sleep on snagging yours, this show will certainly sell out. What’s special about this festival is not just the amazing music you’ll enjoy but the location is over-the-top stunning. It’s one-hundred percent worth the trek up Mount Tam for this rockin’ festival with these stellar views of the entire Bay. Produced by Roots and Branches Conservancy, Sound Summit raises money to fund a wide range of community projects that benefit Mount Tamalpais State Park including restorations, conservation efforts and other services that benefit the community and visitors.

Sound Summit Line up for 2024:

Sound Summit started up in 2014 and has always had an impressive line up of musicians (with the exception of 2020s brief hiatus).

About Mountain Theater (The Sidney B. Cushing Memorial Amphitheater)

Built in 1913, the Sidney B. Cushing Memorial Amphitheater (known simply as The Mountain Theater) is maybe most well known for it’s unique architecture and for being home of Marin’s Mountain Play, which has been a tradition in Mill Valley for nearly a century. The theater itself is a natural amphitheater. Unlike The Greek in Berkeley which is a mostly concrete amphitheater, The Mountain Theater’s architecture is largely made of stone and dirt. Originally, it only seated 2,000 people. In the 1930s, the theatre got an upgrade and now seats just 4,000.

Over the years, The Mountain Theater has hosted many rock and roll concerts but maybe the most notable was in the summer of 1967 (The summer of love) called the Fantasy Faire and Magic Mountain Festival which was the first rock festival. Not kidding, this is the scene of the very first rock festival in America.

So, it feels fitting that The Sound Summit would make this theatre it’s home for such a rockin’ festival.
