Daniel Lurie Only Wants a Dollar To Run San Francisco
Daniel Lurie wants San Franciscans to know that he’s not in it for the money because he’s already got a lot of fucking money. With a reported net worth of $33 million, and a mom who’s worth over a billion dollars, Daniel Lurie plans to take a symbolic salary of just $1 when he assumes office in January 2025.
And if San Francisco loves anything, it’s symbols.
Lurie, heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, ousted incumbent Mayor London Breed after mounting the most expensive campaign in San Francisco’s history. His campaign raised nearly $16 million, with about half coming from his personal wealth. Lurie’s background marks a stark contrast to London Breed, a fellow San Francisco native who grew up in public housing. Unlike Breed, Lurie will be the city’s first mayor in nearly a century to take office without prior elected experience. He is the founder of the Tipping Point, a nonprofit dedicated to addressing poverty.
“I have spent my life fighting poverty,” Lurie said in a statement according to KQED. Considering Lurie is a multi-millionaire, and his mom is a billionaire, it’s safe to say he has been victorious in his fight against poverty considering he’s never been poor.
Running as a moderate Democrat, Lurie campaigned on a platform of change, pledging to reform what he described as a “corrupt and dysfunctional” political system in San Francisco. His priorities include creating clean and safe streets, addressing the drug and behavioral health crisis, overhauling ineffective bureaucracy, and expanding affordable housing.
Many of Lurie’s proponents claim that his vast wealth is actually a good thing. The logic is that Daniel Lurie can’t be bought by special interests. However, this argument is similar to the one Trump supporters make in favor of Donald Trump.
One thing is for certain, we’ll find out exactly what his plans are in January. Hopefully San Francisco’s material conditions improve for the City’s most vulnerable.
