Nutcracker Nightmare Fantasy: A Sensual Twist on the Classic Tale
By Kellie Hanna
Nutcracker Nightmare Fantasy is a provocative holiday experience you won’t want to miss. Told through seductive aerial, pole, modern dance, and roller skating, the story is a reimagining of the familiar Nutcracker Ballet plot. It’s got elements of circus and burlesque, and it’s more kinky than wholesome, debaucherous than innocent, and insanely fun to boot.
Now in its third year, Nutcracker Nightmare Fantasy takes the audience on an electrifying journey with Clara (played by Leah Marie) as she navigates a wild world of fantasy, kinks, and sugar-coated delights. Clara’s transformation from the innocence of childhood to the sensual world of adulthood unfolds in a mesmerizing spectacle that pushes boundaries and leaves you captivated.
Along the way, we encounter delightfully playful versions of classic characters such as Fritz—Clara’s mischievous younger brother—Drosselmeyer, Mother Ginger, the Mouse King, and, of course, the Nutcracker. But there’s more! Krampus (played by Kirsten Gerding), a wind-up doll, and a lively cast of confectionery characters add their own flair, delivering unforgettable performances that take the show to the next level.
The battle scene between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King is captivating, and I thought Sade Symone’s Nutcracker had one of the most commanding presences of any portrayal I’ve seen.
Still, I think my favorite part of the evening was the solo performances by the confections in the Land of Sweets. Rock Candy, Caramel, Marshmallow, Cupcake, and Big Red Gum each put on a uniquely dazzling and edgy show befitting their names and personalities.
In between acts, I got to participate in a bubble-blowing contest (I lost), and throughout the show, performers interacted with audience members, adding to the fun.
The venue, Flux Vertical Theater, couldn’t have been better for such a spectacular show. It’s a small but open proscenium theater and dance studio, with poles spaced throughout and seating arranged so that audiences can get up close to the action. A collaborative effort by Leigh Marie and Kirsten Gerding, the space hosts their dance company, pole dance and burlesque classes, workshops, and events like Nutcracker Nightmare Fantasy.
While the holidays are a time to celebrate life and spend time with friends and family, they can also be stressful and even downright depressing for some. No matter how you’re feeling this holiday season, Nutcracker Nightmare Fantasy will definitely light you up like nothing else, even if just for a little while–I promise.
Don’t miss out! Nutcracker Nightmare Fantasy runs for three more nights: December 13th, 14th, and 15th, starting at 7 PM each night at Flux Vertical Theater, 811 University Ave, Berkeley.
