By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic ‘sound scapes’ and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century. Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerized rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from Electro to Hip-Hop, from Techno to SynthPop. In their live performances, Kraftwerk composer, author and producer Ralf Hütter illustrates his belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Lane enlisted Queens of the Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme to help her bring Denim & Diamonds to life, with whom she assembled a studio band of big-budget talent. With Homme’s help, Lane transformed 11K+ the seeds of ideas she had for years into an album that nods to her wide-ranging influences. Denim & Diamonds was a chance for Lane to take stock of her first decade as a songwriter as she traces her origin story from her religious youth in South Carolina to Nashville Rebel.

4/23 | Fox Theater | 1807 Telegraph Ave, Oakland | 7 p.m. Doors | $56.25-$78.15

Ichiko Aoba has the power to bend space around her, pulling listeners from reality and surrounding them in the comforting fabric of her imagination. She’s been casting these spells since her debut at 19 years old, making picturesque dioramas with only her voice and guitar. But in recent years, she’s turned a corner and let a new process take hold. The Japanese singer, songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist tapped into the full breadth of her ability, marrying the classical guitar of her earlier work with lofty orchestral sweeps. As Ichiko’s star continues to rise, she’s committed to being her truest self. Along with her creative partners Umebayashi and Kobayashi, she’s returned to the recesses of her reverie for her latest project. Her compositions have become grander, her songwriting more refined, and she’s preparing for her largest world tour to date—yet her ability to make listeners feel like they’re inside in a private cosmos alongside her remains as strong as ever.

In his first Bay Area appearance since 2019, Takasi appears in person to present Microcosmos, Anti-Cosmos and Untitled, a trio of pandemic-era pieces (which include forays into surrealist-inspired graphic collage and spoken word) and the slow-rolling and stirringly emotional 2024 work Constellation, to be presented by live electronics by Makino Takashi himself.

Chase Petra
4/25 | The Independent | 628 Divisadero St, SF | 9 p.m. | $30.36

Chase Petra’s music has always been about growth: growing up, growing out, growing tired of what others expect of you. The Long Beach, CA trio’s sense of figuring things out in real time is what makes Chase Petra so relatable, as the band’s “quarter-life-crisis pop” elevates deep introspection to navigate the messiness and confusion that comes with modern life. Their songs are guided by the age-old push-and-pull between what it means to grow up and be grown up, to see your once-bright dreams dulled by the responsibilities of adulthood and grapple with the fallout.
