California Mayor Says He Wants To Give The Unhoused “all the Fentanyl they want” to Purge Population

California has been in the midst of a well-publicized, and politically exploited homelessness crisis. The situation has been exacerbated by the availability of fentanyl which has turned sections of American cities into scenes reminiscent of a zombie apocalypse. Everything from harm reduction to forced incarceration and treatment have been proposed to deal with the fallout from the crisis.
However, Lancaster Mayor Rex Parris proposed something unprecedented. Parris, a Republican mayor in overwhelmingly blue Los Angeles County, suggested that he wanted to deal with Lancaster’s homeless population by providing them with a steady supply of fentanyl, not in the name of harm reduction, but as a way to increase the odds of overdose, thus reducing the city’s number of unhoused residents.
The Antelope Valley which consists primarily of Lancaster and the neighboring city of Palmdale are often considered afterthoughts in Los Angeles County. This arid area north of the ‘City of Angels’ is mostly known for neo-nazis, the rapper Afroman, and that’s about it. But thanks to Rex Parris, the valley now has the distinction of being home to the mayor that wants people to die of mass drug overdoses so he doesn’t have to deal with the homelessness crisis.
The fentanyl comment isn’t Parris’ only controversy, the six-time-elected mayor is facing a recall effort due to allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
This type of behavior from elected officials should be shocking, but in the age of Donald Trump, every day seems to be just another episode of Black Mirror that America is forced to bear witness to. The Republican Party has normalized fascism to the point that mayors in cities openly suggest mass death as a means to end homelessness.
The only way for the country to reverse course is to stop voting against their interests, a strange hatred for the poor persists in communities across the country, and our elected officials exemplify this. While Parris’ suggestion, whether serious or not, was disgusting – the fact that he has been elected by the people of Lancaster six times is significantly more telling.
On some level, the American people appear to perceive cruelty as some kind of strength, but most Americans, especially in primarily working class communities like Lancaster, are only a few missed paychecks from being the people that Rex Parris wants to force-feed Fentanyl to.
Most of our problems are the result of ultra rich oligarchs robbing us blind, not the dude hunched over behind a liquor store, high on fentanyl in a desert that primarily exists as semi-affordable housing for Los Angeles’ many super commuters.
But this is America – a place where low level crime by the impoverished is treated like an existential crisis, but large scale crime by the wealthy is celebrated and rewarded.
