San Francisco Democrats Want To Push The Party Further Right
San Francisco has for a long time enjoyed a reputation of being a ‘progressive paradise’ where everyone lives life on their own terms without fear of persecution. It has also been described as a ‘communist shithole’ where human feces act as organic landmines on streets littered with broken glass from car burglaries committed by an army of ‘shiesty mask‘ wearing teens on dirt bikes who live in luxury condos financed by selling fentanyl to an unhoused population that migrated into San Francisco from all over the world because the city pays the unhoused to terrorize everyone in order to initiate the fall of western civilization.
This may come as a surprise, but neither is true.
San Francisco is a major American city focused on optics just like any other, and right wing propaganda, despite the fact that San Francisco is among America’s safest and most aggressively gentrified cities, has portrayed San Francisco as uniquely crime ridden.
Regardless of the validity of these claims, perception is being treated as reality. San Francisco politicians, spearheaded by the leadership of Mayor Daniel Lurie, an heir to the Levi Jeans fortune, has prompted city leaders to advocate for a new centrist approach to the party they are calling ‘new pragmatism.’
This “new pragmatism” movement is likely behind Bill Maher gushing over a white house meeting with President Trump or Gavin Newsom doing podcasts with Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon to bash trans athletes even though they are like only fucking 5 of them in the first place. Regardless of the numbers, they should be given the same rights as anyone else. Newsom likely would have publicly agreed with this sentiment in 2020, but since he, like most Democrats, believe in nothing, he has publicly shifted course on this issue.
You’re likely wondering what this will mean on a policy level. It means larger police budgets, the criminalization of homelessness, and writing blank checks to developers who lobby local politicians effectively. They’re not using this language, but this is what it actually means.
And we’ve already seen the horror these so-called “moderate” policies can cause.
When the recall of District Attorney Chesa Boudin occurred, and was subsequently replaced by Brooke Jenkins, many didn’t know what to expect from the former Boudin staffer, but shortly after becoming District Attorney, Jenkins began undoing many of Boudin’s most progressive reforms. This included the reversal of manslaughter charges against former SFPD rookie, Christopher Samayoa for the murder of Keita O’Neil.
But this reshaping of San Francisco precedes Daniel Lurie, it started with London Breed, who famously suggested requiring the unhoused to pass a drug test prior to being eligible for public assistance such as welfare and food stamps. This suggestion turned into a ballot measure that passed, placing San Francisco to the right of some GOP governors and former Presidential Candidate Ron DeSantis.
Democratic Party Chair Nancy Tung, believes that this shift will better position Democrats to win local, state and national elections after Republicans handily defeated Democrats in 2024. The best way for the Democrats to win, proven by the persisting popularity of Bernie Sanders, is to offer popular programs like universal healthcare, free education, and higher taxes on the wealthy.
But the donors don’t seem to like that, so instead, Democrats are deciding to become more like Republicans.
Things are about to get really shitty.
