Sunday Fundays, FREE Weekly Dances, Games, Workouts & More in Union Square

There are 200 days of family-friendly programming continuing in Union Square all summer long and into the fall. 

Currently on Union Square, there are eight weekly programs and one monthly program, ranging from live music to fitness to chess and juggling lessons. Additional weekly programs will be added in May, bringing the total to 13 programs per week.

The Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and Biederman Redevelopment Ventures Corporation (BRV) are providing the FREE programming and amenities, bringing a lot of new life, curiosity, and community vibes to downtown San Francisco.

Union Square currently offers eight weekly programs and one monthly program, ranging from live music to fitness to chess and juggling lessons. Additional weekly programs will be added in May, bringing the total to 13 programs per week.

The fun, family-friendly programming will run through October 20, with some special events such as movie nights and larger performances sprinkled throughout the summer too!

The new summer programs and amenities will include:

  • A second ping-pong table and a new foosball table added to the Plaza for daily use.  
  • Free daily amenities open on Mondays, expanding operations from 6 days to 7 days per week and extended hours until 7pm.  
  • Mahjong Mondays: Lessons and Social Mondays, 11:30am – 1:30pm (new program). Come learn to play mahjong, hone your strategy, or meet new opponents during weekly sessions.  
  • Sketching Classes, Mondays, 4:30pm – 6:30pm (new program). Learn how to do charcoal, pencil and pen sketch drawings based on figures, architecture, nature and more. 
  • Toddler Tuesdays, Tuesdays, 10:00am –11:30am. Music, movement, and fairies, oh my! Bring your little ones for interactive and musical activities. All ages welcome, but geared towards kids aged 2– 4. 
  • Tuesday Blues, Tuesdays, 4:30pm – 6:30pm (new time). Turn your Tuesday into a celebration of music and joy as the vibrant sounds of blues and jazz music fill the Square! 
  • Workout Wednesdays: Tai Chi, Wednesdays, 8:00am – 9:00am (new program). Achieve greater physical and mental wellness by practicing the art of Tai Chi. 
  • Workout Wednesdays: Cardio Dance, Wednesdays, 5:30pm – 6:30pm (new time). Get ready to move, groove, and feel amazing at this free outdoor fitness class! Break a sweat and meet a new community at this rotating-style class.  
  • Lunchbreak Music, Thursdays, 11:30am – 1:30pm. Bring your lunch for an alfresco escape and tap your toes to local indie and singer-songwriters.  
  • Crafternoons, Thursdays, 4:30pm – 6:30pm (new time). Learn to make and take home a wide-ranging variety of arts and crafts, from knitting to upcycled sculptures to natural printmaking. Drop in anytime during the program and stay as long as you’d like.  
  • Chess: Lessons and Social, Fridays, 11:30am – 1:30pm (new time). Come learn to play chess, hone your strategy, or meet new opponents during weekly sessions.  
  • Union Square Dances, Fridays, 5:00pm – 8:00pm (new program). Rotating styles of free live music and dancing outdoors in the Square include Tango, Western Square Dance, Salsa, Swing and Bollywood. It features a dance lesson each night and open dancing. All are welcome and no experience or partner is needed! 
  • Juggling Lessons, Saturdays, 11:30am – 1:30pm (new time). Test your dexterity and meet talented jugglers! Join in for a quick lesson, stay the whole time, or just enjoy watching others put their skills to the test. All skill levels welcome, and beginner equipment (scarves and balls) will be provided. 
  • Family Sunday Fun Days, Sundays, 11:00am – 2:00pm. Calling all kids and their families! Join us for fun and free drop-in S.T.E.A.M. activities. All ages welcome, but geared towards kids aged 5 – 12.  
  • (Monthly) Second Saturdays ‘Round the World, Second Saturdays, 11:00am – 2:00pm. Experience the many cultural traditions represented in San Francisco through rotating days of themed music, dance performance, and crafts. 
  • Beginning in August join us in the Square for monthly movie nights, karaoke events, art showcases and more!
