FREE: Femi Kuti at Prospect Park
When I first learned of this event the listing said “Free Femi Kuti!” and I became immediately alarmed that Femi Kuti had, for some reason, been recently incarcerated and needed my help. Thankfully (for him, mostly) that won’t be necessary as the alarm was caused by a lack of grammatical attention and not by imprisonment.
The son of legendary Afrobeat Pioneer Fela Kuti plays tonight at the Prospect Park Band Shell as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn festival. Opening for him is Melvin Gibbs, a ridiculously awesome bassist, and his band Elevated Entity. Their Afro-Brazilian sound is the perfect warm up to Kuti’s incredibly energetic performance.
Bring some wine or beers, grab a blanket and relax in the summertime sun, but get there as early as possible: Kuti’s gonna have his 14 piece band Positive Force in tow and as it’s the first sunny day in weeks and weeks, this promises to be a pretty crowded party.
