FREE: Paper Moon at Brooklyn Bridge Park
I know I’ve posted several outdoor-movie-screening events listing lately, but with good reason: they are free, they take advantage of the nice weather, and allow you to spend some quality time among NYC’s rooftop vistas and outdoor spaces.
Tonight though, is the best of them all, with an outdoor screening of Peter Bogdanovich’s Depression Era classic Paper Moon, starring Ryan O’Neill and 9 year old Tatum O’Neill, to celebrate Brooklyn Bridge Conservancy’s 10th year of their “Movies with a View” series. This gorgeous black and white film tells the story of a scam artist and a little girl who may or may not be his daughter. After the funeral of her mother, mourners find that Moses Pray is heading in the direction of little Addie’s Aunt. Presenting himself as a man of God, he is trusted to bring Addie to her Aunt’s place since he’s going that way, anyway. Addie, wise and watchful, soon discovers that Mose is little more than a scam artist traveling from town to town delivering unordered Bibles and charging exorbitant prices to recently widowed women whom he identifies through the obituary columns of local papers. Soon, Addie and Moses become a team.
There is something poignant and tragic about watching Ryan and Tatum O’Neill together, knowing about personal tragedies that affected both actors throughout their lives, however the screening takes place at one of the most beautiful spots in the city, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and is preceded with a short by Bryan Brinkman, and a set by DJ Tim “Love” Lee
FUN FACT: I’ve noticed an eerie resemblance between Peter Bogdanovich and the guy on the Smart Puffs bag:
