Broke-Ass of the Week – Logan Mitchell of Cookie Wag
Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit'probably not.
Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.
Logan is a Jane of all trades (that’s like the female version of a Jack of all trades right?). She’s cooks, she bakes, she works on cars, and she knows how to build things and blow them up. She even worked on Myth Busters for a little bit. Yeah badass, I know!
But she’s also been down with the Broke-Ass Revolution since day one. I was actually working with Logan in a shitty restaurant in North Beach when I first started doing the Broke-Ass Stuart zines and she probably has one of the first copies. But more importantly she can shake some motherfucking pots and pans. Just look at the above photo, she’s basically saying, “Bitch, I don’t even need electricity to cook my ass off!”
Logan and her business partner Keli, make up Cookie Wag SF and are very much part of the Street Food Movement going on in SF. They sell homemade cookies and ice cream that are so delectable that my girlfriend is currently obsessed with them. If you wanna taste these delights yourself follow them on twitter or hit them up at Cookiewag@gmail.com. They might even deliver!
Name: Logan Mitchell
Age: 27
Occupation: Cookie maker, people pleaser and occasional myth buster
What neighborhood do you live in?: Duboce Triangle
Best money saving tip: Cook at home. Embrace pork shoulder and chicken thighs, they are cheap and delicious. Grow herbs and spend your money on decent wine and all your meals will be satisfying and tasty.
What do you refuse to spend money on?: Supermarket produce. Farmer’s markets are the way to go.
Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: A meal at the French Laundry. Actually, it was a gift from my fiancée but we’re broke asses together so I felt it too
How’d that feel?: When we pulled up to the restaurant, I cried. It was truly overwhelming and completely worth it.
Favorite cheap eat: Yamo. I recently fell in love all over again. Also Mission Street Food.
Favorite dive bar: The Bitter End. I love pub trivia. I don’t know if that’s a dive bar, but I like it.
Best deal you’ve ever gotten: $150 business class to Thailand. Generous friends are pretty wonderful. Also a $1500 a month 2 bedroom apartment with separate dining and living rooms in Duboce Triangle. That’s amazing.
Favorite free thing to do: Sit in the park with a picnic, what else?!
If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: A new computer. Mine died yesterday. And a new refrigerator.
Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: I think my life is so amazing and I pretty much attribute it to being broke. I grew up like that and never wished it any other way.
Do you own my book?: SF, yes. NY, no. I also have the first SF version which is photocopied and stapled together.
Best hangover cure: Getting my ass out of bed and showering seems to help. Although lying in the dark watching TV all day is appealing sometimes.
Are you a hipster?: I’m too fat to be a hipster. Although my first yelp review referred to me as a “nice hipster girl” so I don’t know anymore.
