Diamond in the Rough: Jersey City via Design*Sponge
I have mentioned Design*Sponge before on this site but I want to draw your attention today to the “City Guides” where intrepid explorers with impeccable taste in everything from bars, shopping and food give the lowdown on what’s hot in their city.
Recently D*S posted a City Guide to Jersey City. Written by Kristen Scalia proprierter of JC’s kannibal home, the guide delves into shopping, dining, drinking and architectural highlights of the city. Despite the fact that I grew up in the Garden State in the very town where jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie elected to spend his final years, I was a skeptical as anyone in the world and was pretty certain that Jersey City had nothing to offer. Scalia acknowledges this but also proves me wrong: “As the second largest city in the state, Jersey City is a bit of a phoenix. From the ashes of decaying factories and crumbling industrial parks, warehouses and rail yards sprout artists’ lofts and farmers’ markets, new businesses and young families. I was so enchanted by its rows of brownstones and quaint parks that I moved into the downtown area five years ago and a little less than one year ago gave up my midtown job (and 401K) to open a boutique right down the block from the Grove Street Path station.”
After perusing this guide I’m looking forward to hopping on the PATH on the first warm weekend day this spring.
