Washington Commons – Five Hour Happy Hour Power

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Those $4 beers aren't going to drink themselves.

I love happy hour, and not just at times when I have to check my bank balance before buying my monthly metrocard. The thought of people gathering with friends to release whatever tension has built up during eight hours at a shitty job '“ and, you know, drink '“ is a light guiding me out from underneath the rubble atop my own desk.

Unfortunately, my boss hates fun and 5pm rolls around to find me still mired in platitudes and busywork. And I work in cultural Afghanistan '“ the Upper East Side '“ so the chances of getting to a bar that isn’t terrible to drink my woes away on the cheap for longer than 15 minutes are slim-to-none. Enter Washington Commons.

This Prospect Heights bar has a happy hour that stretches from an unheard of 3pm – 8pm every night that features two bucks off every beer you order. And in the long tradition of beer bars on Brooklyn, the beer list is genuinely ambitious, varied and inexpensive: recent visits have yielded brews like Dragonstooth Stout and Founders Red’s Rye.

Surprisingly enough, Washington Commons also has a lot of appeal to those not fluent in broke '“ the outdoor space is large and inviting, the bar itself is u-shaped to facilitate maximum access to the booze, and the three bathrooms ensure you don’t waste valuable drinking time waiting in line. But let’s not get distracted here: you can pay for your Allagash White with that crumpled five in your pocket and still have enough for a tip. Solid.

Polina Yamshchikov - Flirt Poor

Polina is Siberian by way of Alabama, and therefore cannot pronounce "fire" or "iron" correctly but despite this can still woo men with her cooking skills and enormous Russian cheeks. She can usually be spotted on the streets of Brooklyn either yelling into a cell phone in one of five languages or swilling gin at an inappropriate hour of the morning.
