A Broke-Ass Guide to Doing Your Own PR
This bit of advice comes from the lovely Joanna Riedl who is a fashion and lifestyle publicist.
These days, everyone is like out there – whether you want to be or not – thanks to the transparency of social media, mobile connectivity and the general entrepreneurial spirit of our generation. Seems like everyone is doing something they want to publicize, but PR costs money, money you probably don’t have and if you did, money you’d rather spend on something you can actually touch. Believe me, I get it. I’m approached to do free PR all the freaking time. But since this is a new year and I am in the spirit of giving (myself free PR via this blog post, oh snap), I’m giving away the farm, the gems of what I do to help you position yourself as, wait, what are you an expert of again? Details, details, never get lost in the details. Here are my top 10 tips to do your own PR.
1. Make lots of friends
2. Be nice to everyone
3. Know when to talk and when to shut up
4. Learn how to spell correctly
5. Go to lots of parties
6. Don’t get drunk
7. If you do get drunk, don’t throw up on yourself
8.If you throw up on someone else, say I’m sorry right away and ACTUALLY mean it (first lesson in crisis control)
9. Listen to the good things people say about you and repeat those things to
anyone who will listen, over and over and over – without being annoying
10. Brand yourself on social media and unless you are a rock star (literally) or Broke Ass Stuart, don’t tweet about getting drunk or getting naked
Joanna Riedl is a fashion and lifestyle publicist in San Francisco. She says when, she says who, she says how much. Oh wait, no, that’s a scene from Pretty Woman. In reality she is just a generally smart, motivated creative lass who always wanted to be her own boss. She spends most of her time either on the computer, on the phone or at parties trying figure out how to get you to talk about her clients. For more information on exactly what PR is, look it up!
