Dance, Disco, and Debbie Harry: Your Shakin Saturday

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Before the fireworks get kicked off, and you’ve eaten your umpteenth weenie, there’s plenty of festivities to indulge in. Mostly a lot that involves hotpants and Grace Jones. Since bemoaning the loss of Sunday Best, MeanRed Productions has moved onto greener pastures, making sure your summer doesn’t lack in expertly thrown dance parties.

First off is their Dance Right vs The Disco at Puma Social Club. Don’t worry that’s not some weird cougar bar in the city that just opened, it’s a PUMA sponsored event space at the South Street Seaport. Don’t let the corporate ties fool you, they’ll be throwing down free events all week long. Although the seaport is usually crawling with tourists, wait til the fanny packs clear out and head down for free entry, open bar, foosball, ping pong, and DJ’s from 9:00pm til 1:00am. That’ll leave you nice and drunk with three more available boozing hours. Despite its tourist reputation, it’s hard to find a better view of the skyline than the waterside at night. Be sure to RSVP for free entry, otherwise I’m sure there’s a line to wait in with your name on it.

Don’t want to leave the comfort of your own borough, get your dance on at the Brooklyn Museum’s Factory 2010 Party. As part of Target’s First Saturdays, everyone will be able to grab their own 15 minutes of fame with this Warhol-inspired soiree. In honor of the museum’s  “Andy Warhol: Last Decade” exhibit, guests are invited to pose for portraits so work on your best Grace Jones pose. And there will be cameras set up to ask party-goers questions about themselves as part of a video series. Also no Factory party would be complete without the music of Warhol’s famous friends, so expect plenty of tunes from Bowie, Blondie, and the Velvets. Check out their full calender for all the Warhol themed events on Saturday.

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
